Allwyn, who own the National Lottery in the UK, have revealed that they are working with Aldi to allow customers to buy tickets from self-service checkouts.

National Lottery tickets have been available to buy from staff at Aldi stores since 2021, but will now be offered to all self-checkout users for the first time.

The full rollout, which is expected to be completed by June this year, will allow players to buy their Lucky Dip tickets for draws including the Lotto, EuroMillions, Thunderball and Set For Life games.

In addition, those with a National Lottery Fast Pay card can easily self-scan their cards to generate their bespoke tickets at these machines.

In the announcement, Allwyn’s operations director Jenny Blogg stated: “As we continue our retail transformation journey – adapting our offerings for a changing retail landscape and new-look stores – we’re delighted to be expanding our partnership with Aldi.

“This will ultimately see the National Lottery available at every single touchpoint in Aldi’s customer journey, helping us to reach even more players. So, however Aldi customers choose to shop – whether at the main tills or via self-checkout – they’ll always have the option to pick up a National Lottery game.

“This project has been a massive effort by the teams at both Allwyn and Aldi, and my sincere thanks must go to everyone involved.”

Allwyn took control of the UK’s National Lottery in February 2024 for a 10-year period and, according to their website, aims to use it to change lives every day.

The company’s ambition is to attract more players and raise more money for good causes. One of their mantras is by creating a games portfolio that is ‘fit for the digital era’ and create ‘data-enabled new technology into retail.’

Each week, the National Lottery generates an average of over £30m for good causes across the country.

Aldi, which is the UK’s fourth largest supermarket, will be looking to provide the service across its UK stores that total over 1,050.

Speaking about the rollout, Aldi’s communications director Richard Thornton said: “We’re always looking for ways to improve the shopping experience for our customers which is why we’ve made it even easier for them to enter the National Lottery while picking up essentials at our self-checkouts.

“As the UK’s cheapest supermarket, our shoppers know they’ll always find amazing value at Aldi, but we hope some lucky customers manage to find the winning numbers at our self-checkouts too.”

Allwyn and Aldi did specify that, as with any age restricted purchases, an age verification check from an Aldi colleague must be made before any shoppers can complete their purchase of National Lottery tickets.

This is not the first time Allwyn have partnered with a leading high-street supermarket. The owners of the National Lottery are also working alongside Asda to begin testing an innovative scratchcard purchasing option for land-based ticket buyers
