NFL games explained
An NFL game has four 15-minute quarters, but stoppages for passes, out-of-bounds plays, penalties, and timeouts mean the whole thing often lasts around three hours. Special teams handle kickoffs (to start each half and after any score), punts, field goals, and extra points.
The offence starts each play with a snap and gets four downs to gain 10 yards. Making it earns a fresh set; failing, however, hands the ball over at the spot, after a punt, or following a field goal try. The aim of keeping possession in American football is to create scoring chances. These come from:
Touchdown: 6 points
Extra point kick: 1 point after a touchdown
Two-point conversion: 2 points after a touchdown
Field goal: 3 points
Safety: 2 points when the defence tackles the offence in its own end zone
At the end of the fourth quarter, the side with the most points wins. If it’s tied, the game goes to overtime. The NFL’s unified overtime rules, introduced in 2025, guarantee both sides at least one possession unless the first results in a defensive score.
Regular-season overtime runs for 10 minutes, with ties standing if time runs out. In the postseason, 15-minute periods continue until there’s a winner.
Understanding NFL betting odds and markets
American football often pits sides of very different strengths, so bookmakers set a points margin to even things up. It works the same way as if you were betting a handicap in the Premier League or EFL Championship, though here many see it as the main market. One side starts with a head start, and your bet wins if the team you’ve backed finishes ahead once that margin’s applied.
Moneyline is the American term for NFL match winner betting. Most UK bookies list it as 1 or 2 only and void bets if the game ends in a draw. Sometimes you’ll see a 1-X-2 version, too. Overtime is generally included, but always check the small print.
Over/Under betting in the NFL is where you wager on whether a particular stat will finish above or below the number set by the bookmaker. This could be the total combined points in a game or quarter, or something more specific, like a quarterback’s passing yards, which falls under player props.

You can back a team to cover the spread over the full 60 minutes or just within halves and quarters. Alternate spreads change the margin for different prices, and overtime only counts in full-game markets.
This is a bet on the straight-up winner. For halves and quarters, you’re wagering only on who leads at the end of that segment.
The call is whether the combined points from both sides finish over or under the bookie’s line. A 45.5 total means over with 46+, under with 45 or fewer. Alternates and half or quarter markets are also available.
Instead of spreads, you’re betting on the size of the victory. Markets are split into ranges like 1–6, 7–12, 13–18 points, and so on. Some bookies offer “either team by X points” bands, which combine both sides into one price.
Bet on how many yards a player gains in a game. Could be passing, rushing, or receiving individually, or combined totals like rushing + receiving, or passing + rushing for some quarterbacks. Single-play props like ‘Longest reception’ or ‘Longest rush’ focus on one big gain.
Covers a quarterback’s output through the air. Markets include completions, attempts, passing touchdowns, and interceptions. ‘Over 22.5 completions' needs 23 or more completed passes, regardless of yards.
All about production on the ground. Includes rushing attempts, rushing touchdowns, and total rushing yards when not combined with receiving. Touchdowns require the ball to cross the goal line on a rushing play.
Focuses on a pass catcher’s contribution and includes receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. The latter comes from catching in the end zone or catching in play and taking it over the line with control and both feet (or legal body parts) in bounds.
Purely about who gets the points. ‘Anytime touchdown scorer' pays if your player reaches the end zone at any point via rush, catch, or defensive return. First and last scorer markets have bigger payouts but higher risk. Two-point conversions don’t count as touchdowns. Kickers have their own markets, like total field goals made.
Covers tackles + assists (combined), sacks, and interceptions by defenders. Tackles are credited for bringing the ball carrier down; assists are shared stops. A sack is tackling the quarterback behind the line on a passing play.
Covers specific team outcomes in a match. Examples include first scoring play type, team to score first or last, total rushing or passing yards, and total first downs. Some markets track the longest touchdown or field goal by that team, or halftime/full-time results where the same side must lead at both stages.
This market resets after every score. You’re betting on the type of the very next points in the game.
You’re betting on the outcome of the current drive. Options can include touchdown, field goal, punt, or turnover (interception or fumble).
