Manchester City remain sixth favourites to win the Champions League despite teetering on the brink of elimination.

The champions of England, who won Europe’s showpiece tournament in 2023, have had a disastrous league phase campaign so far and threw away a 2-0 lead away to PSG on Wednesday night.

Despite goals early in the second half from Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland, City conceded four times in the final 35 minutes to lose 4-2 and drop outside the top 24.

The new Champions League format sees all 36 clubs compete in one giant league table, with the top eight qualifying for the last 16 and the teams ranked ninth to 24th going into a play-off round.

Finish 25th or below and you are eliminated from European competition all together, and 25th is where City sit following this latest defeat.

They face Club Brugge, currently 20th, at the Etihad next Wednesday in their final fixture, needing a win to make the play-offs.

But the latest odds have City at 10/1 to go all the way, with their pedigree still counting for plenty in the bookies’ thinking.

Liverpool, who are top of the league with seven wins from seven, are understandably 81/20 favourites, as Arne Slot has improved on Jurgen Klopp’s groundwork over the past few years and turned the Reds into a clinical, winning machine so far this campaign.

Barcelona are second favourites, with Hansi Flick’s side second in the table after six-straight wins. Their only blip was a 2-1 defeat to Monaco on the first matchday.

Reigning champions Real Madrid are joint-third favourites with Arsenal at 121/20. The Spanish giants, record European champions with 15 titles to their name, have had a relatively poor league phase and sit 16th. This means they face a likely play-off round tie. But Carlo Ancelotti’s superstars are known for growing into the season and as soon as the knockout rounds begin, they tend to find their form.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners are third in the table after winning five and drawing one of their first seven games. Slightly off the pace in the Premier League, Arsenal’s solid defence certainly gives them a good chance of going far in the knockout rounds. Star man Bukayo Saka should be back in time for the quarter-finals if his team-mates can navigate the last 16 without him.

The fourth English side in the competition this year are Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s men have performed in fits and starts this season. They remain ninth in the Champions League table so could well qualify for the last 16 directly if they beat Celtic on Wednesday. However, they are 51/1 joint-12th favourites to go all the way.
