William Hill pays out record amount after Rory McIlroy wins the 2025 Masters

Rory McIlroy ended an 11-year wait to finally win the career Grand Slam as he won the 2025 Masters following a playoff victory over Justin Rose at Augusta National.
The Northern Irishman had been stuck on four major championships since winning the 2014 PGA Championship. While it was glory for Rory, several bookmakers didn’t exactly enjoy the news, most notably William Hill.

Indeed, the bookmaker made one of their largest ever payouts on golf following the 35-year-old’s victory on the weekend. Tens of thousands of pounds were staked on him to finally end his Masters hoodoo.
However, not only did William Hill pay out on his victory, their pre-tournament offer to give customers their money back as a free bet if McIlroy won the event has resulted in them paying out over £1m to betters.
"Masters Sunday 2025 will go down as one of the most dramatic we've ever seen, but also as one of the most significant in the history of betting on golf for William Hill,” said Lee Phelps, a William Hill spokesperson.
"Rory McIlroy was always the biggest liability in our book before a ball was hit, and the stakes were raised when we announced money back as a free bet if McIlroy completed the career grand slam.
"In total, we're now looking at a seven-figure payout. We laid tens of thousands of individual bets on McIlroy to win the Masters alone, while there was a good spread of business across the competitors this year with punters safe in the knowledge they had some Rory insurance.
"In the end it was an amazing sporting moment and it's great to see Rory in that elite group of golfers."
It wasn’t just William Hill that paid out a generous amount to their customers. Coral also settled runner-up Rose as part of their playoff promotion.
"It proved to be a costly result but given the achievement, and the way he (McIlroy) battled on the final day, we are paying out with a smile on our faces," said Coral’s John Hill.
McIlroy became just the sixth player after Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods to win all four major championships in their careers, collecting the ultimate Grand Slam achievement.
Rose finished second for the third time at the Masters and this was his second playoff defeat, losing to Sergio Garcia in similar fashion back in 2017.
Next up is the PGA Championship in May, which will be held at Quail Hollow Golf Club, a venue where McIlroy has won four times on the PGA Tour. He is currently 5/1 to win the event.
The Irishman is 6/1 to win a second US Open title in June - via Coral - and is the same price to win the Open, which will be held at Royal Portrush in his homeland.
He is currently 80/1 to win the calendar Grand Slam in 2025 following his Masters success. Additionally, the player is 15/8 to win two major titles and 14/1 to achieve three in the same year.
