Wolves and Southampton are both on the hunt for a new manager after another miserable weekend of football. Who do the bookies have as favourites to take over?

Wolves were subjected to their fourth defeat on the bounce on Saturday, this time to relegation rivals Ipswich, a game that again ended in disgrace for the Wolves squad.

Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha were both involved in a flare-up after the final whistle, just days after Mario Lemina was stripped of the captaincy for his post-match altercation against West Ham.

The defeat at Molineux leaves Wolves 19th in the standings, five points adrift of safety, and now looking for a new manager after sacking Gary O'Neil.

Vitor Pereira is the overwhelming frontrunner to take over from O'Neil, with Sky Bet making him the 1/6 favourite.

Wolves have built a reputation for signing Portuguese managers and players in recent years thanks to their strong connection to agent Jorge Mendes.

Despite now plying his trade in Saudi Arabia, Pereira has an impressive CV that's seen him manage big European clubs like Porto, Olympiacos and Fenerbahce.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has been without a club since leaving his post at Manchester United in 2021, is second in the running at 8/1. His short and unsuccessful stint at then-Premier League strugglers Cardiff in 2014 suggests he might not be cut out for a relegation scrap.

David Moyes at 12/1 is a manager who's been there and bought the t-shirt. The Scot has pedigree at the bottom half of the table after impressive spells at Everton and West Ham.

Whoever takes over will have a huge job on his hands. After the defeat to Ipswich, O'Neil claimed his players had to shoulder the responsibility.

"We deal with things like that very, very seriously, as you saw last week," he said. "It's annoying in that we've got enough to do at this moment in time, we've got enough to fix without me having to spend time on things that go on off the pitch.

"So the players do need to take some responsibility. But I'll help them with all of it so we get back to work on Monday morning.

"People can point the finger at me but some of the responsibilities have to land on the players in those moments. When we get in good positions and we spoon the ball off the pitch - I can't help them with that."

It's been a matter of when, not if, for Russell Martin for quite some time. His stubbornness to play out from the back has cost Southampton time and time again this season.

And last night's 5-0 thrashing at Tottenham was the final straw for the Saints board. They're now nine points off safety in last place with just one win in 16 games.

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Danny Rohl has emerged as an early favourite to replace Martin, with Sky Bet pricing the German at 8/11. The 35-year-old performed miracles to keep the Owls in the Championship last season and currently has them just five points off the play-off spots.

His experience in a relegation scrap will be of interest to Southampton, as well as his record in the second tier should they go straight back down.

Graham Potter is at 7/1 and would be considered a real coup for the south coast club. The 49-year-old has been waiting for the right job since leaving Chelsea last year, but Southampton could pose a challenge too far.

Moyes is there again at 10/1 as well as former Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl at 14/1. It's unlikely the Austrian would jump ship at this point after an impressive start to life at Wolfsburg.

Martin was rewarded with a new three-year contract in the summer and had a lot of credit in the bank after taking Southampton back up at the first time of asking. But the 38-year-old admitted he was worried about his position after the Spurs game.

"This is a very precarious job," Martin said. "I can't sit here after losing 5-0, being bottom of the table and pretend I'm feeling confident about my job.

"I've no choice but to work and to fight. That's all I've done in this job and I'll continue to do that until I am told otherwise."
