Natasha Jonas: Can “Miss GB” write one more chapter in her boxing career?

One of the ‘first ladies’ of British women’s boxing, Jonas represented Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games before turning professional and becoming a two-weight unified world champion.

After missing out on world championship gold at super-featherweight and lightweight, she eventually captured the WBO world light-middleweight title in 2022 and then added the IBF and The Ring belts shortly after.

Jonas then dropped down to welterweight and captured the IBF world title with victory over Kandi Wyatt before defending it with a split-decision win over Mikaela Mayer.

Then, in her most recent outing, she retained her IBF title and added the WBC crown, with victory over Ivana Habazin.

With Jonas proving her worth as an elite world champion in two weight classes, she has one goal left – to become an undisputed champion. Victory over Price will put her in line to attempt that feat as she bids to round off her career as the undisputed queen of the welterweights.

Lauren Price: Can two-sport star become UK’s best bet for undisputed glory?

Former Welsh international footballer Price swapped her boots for boxing gloves after being inspired by Jonas’ Team GB Olympic teammate Nicola Adams at London 2012 and has gone undefeated in her eight professional fights so far.

After just three pro fights, she made history by winning the first-ever British women’s title fight to capture the British welterweight title.

Three fights later, she’d upgraded her British title to the WBA, IBO and The Ring welterweight world titles, thanks to a technical decision victory over Jessica McCaskill.

Most recently, Price defeated Bexcy Mateus via third-round TKO to retain her titles and set up a huge all-British clash with Jonas.

Natasha Jonas vs Lauren Price: The key factors

The first key factor to consider in this fight is the age difference. Jonas is 40 years of age, while Price is 10 years her junior.

With age comes experience. Jonas has been there and done it for years, with a strong amateur career and a solid pro career that has seen her share the ring with some of the best world champions in women’s boxing.

For Jonas, this fight is all about taking Price out of her comfort zone. The Welsh world champion hasn’t lost a fight in her career – in fact, she hasn’t even lost a round.

It’s something both women have spoken about in the build-up, with Price accentuating her successes, while Jonas has posed the question of how Price might fare when she finds herself facing adversity for the first time in a world title fight.

Price, meanwhile, is younger in years and only has eight pro fights compared to Jonas’ 19. But any suggestion that Price is raw or green would be foolish.

She captured Commonwealth Games gold in 2018, European and World gold in 2019, and Olympic gold in 2020 in a glittering amateur career. Since turning pro, she’s levelled up her skills significantly as she’s risen to the top of the welterweight division.

That meteoric rise, backed up by a gold-medal-laden amateur career, will give Price all the confidence she needs to step into the ring and deliver another winning performance on Friday night.

For Price, the keys to victory lie in her speed and footwork. She should be the faster fighter on the night, and if she can keep Jonas off balance and unable to plant and throw her power shots, she could reduce Jonas’ knockout threat.

But, in general, that speed and movement should help her bank crucial rounds as the fight progresses.

FIRST’s top tip for Natasha Jonas vs Lauren Price

It’s highly likely that she’ll drop some rounds for the first time in her pro career, but Price’s speed, footwork and desire to prove herself gives her the edge here.

PICK: LAUREN PRICE TO WIN – 2/7 (Betway)

Extra tips

Method of victory odds weren’t available at the time of writing, but backing Price to win on the scorecards would offer the most likely path to success in that market.

The other fights on the card don’t offer too much in the way of value.

But a six-leg accumulator featuring the favourites (Price, Caroline Dubois, Karriss Artingstall, Chloe Watson, Cindy Ngamba and Francesca Hennessy) will pay out at odds of 1.59/1 at Mr.Play, who have fight odds on all of the undercard matchups.

Odds correct at the time of writing.
