England favourites for glory in Saturday’s U21 Euro final against Germany

Defending champions England secured a place in Saturday’s U21 Euros, beating the Netherlands U21 2-1. The victory came courtesy of a Harvey Elliott double, with the Liverpool striker bagging both of his goals in the second half of the game, and he now has a tournament tally of four goals.

The Three Lions will play Germany on Saturday, hoping to win back-to-back titles, having triumphed in 2023. Germany booked their place in the final with a resounding 3-0 win over France.

The final represents the last time a lot of the players will be able to compete in the tournament, and manager Lee Carsley said: “They’re developing as a team and it’s just a shame we only have one game left because I think this team is outstanding.”

90 minute result

Carsley and his young players will be hoping for a win on Saturday, and the bookmakers have them as slight favourites to achieve the feat. Ladbrokes have given England odds of 6/4 to win outright and early payout odds of 11/8, which means if England take a two-goal lead at any time during the match, the bet pays out as if they have won. Germany are only slightly behind in the bookmaker’s eyes, with odds of 8/5. A draw after 90 minutes is priced at 13/5.

England won the U21 Euros in 2023 – the last time the tournament was held and the first time the Three Lions lifted the trophy since 1984. After victory against the Netherlands, they will be hoping to retain the title, which they also managed when defending their 1982 title in 84.

Carsley’s team saw mixed results during the group stages, winning 3-1 against Czechia, but losing 2-1 to Germany and only managing an uninspiring goalless draw with Slovenia. They qualified second from the group behind Germany, but results improved markedly in the knockout stages.

Number of goals

The Three Lions dispatched Spain with a 3-1 victory before Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over the Netherlands.

Germany enjoyed a free-scoring run through the group stages, beating Slovenia 3-0, Czechia 4-2, and England 2-1. In the knockout stages, the Germans beat Italy 3-2 in the quarter finals and France 3-0 in yesterday’s semi-finals. The final could be a high-scoring affair, although Ladbrokes have the most likely 90-minute result as 1-1, with a price of 11/2.

Players to score

Elliott’s brace helped England secure their passage to the final, and his four goals make him the second highest scoring player at the tournament behind Germany’s Nick Woltemade. Teammate, Nelson Weiper, has also been in the goals with three for the tournament.

For England, the bookmakers believe Jay Stansfield is the most likely to score, at odds of 8/5 to score at any time. Jonathan Rowe is 19/10 and Elliott is 23/10. Elliott has been given odds of 16/1 to repeat his antics from the last round and score a brace.

For Germany, tournament leading scorer Woltemade is 13/10 to score at any time, with Weiper 15/8 and Nicolo Tresoldi 19/10.
