Grand National 2025 odds: 33 of the 34 runners confirmed but three are on the cut line
IMAGO: Iroko, being ran at Cheltenham by Jonjo O Neill, is one of the favourites to win the Grand National.
The final field of 34 runners for the Grand National have all but been confirmed; with 33 runners being announced and three further horses battling it out for the final spot in the reduced field.
The field was reduced following seven scratchings made this morning, which included British hope L’Homme Presse. The 40/1 outside shot was withdrawn following a training injury.

In the betting, Stumptown, Iroko, and Intense Raffles are all around the same price at 7/1 via Coral, followed by last year’s winner I Am Maximus, currently priced at 9/1. However, any of around half a dozen horses could go off favourite in Saturday’s flagship race.
Monday morning saw the latest round of scratching for Aintree’s main event on Saturday. Most of the withdrawals were high-priced outsiders, including Brit L’Homme Presse.
However, 33 runners are now guaranteed places in the final line-up of 34, but three horses are vying for that final spot: Duffle Coat, Roi Mage and Shakem Up’Arry.
The Harry Redknapp-owned Shakem Up’Arry, is the former West Ham, Tottenham and Portsmouth manager's chance of having a second Grand National runner.
In 2023, Back On The Lash pulled up after 26 of 30 fences. Shakem Up’Arry missed out on last year’s race but is still in with a shout of taking part this year.
One horse that isn’t taking part is the early favourite Inothewayurthinkin. The Gold Cup winner saw early prices of around 2/1, which would have made him the shortest-priced favourite for a Grand National, but trainer Gavin Cromwell opted against running the 7-year-old, saying:
“He’s only seven-years-old, we’ve worked hard on his jumping this season and it’s progressed.”
Inothewayurthinkin isn’t the only Gold Cup runner to be missing. Third and fourth-placed Gentlemansgame and Monty’s Star have also been withdrawn from the running.
Royal Pagaille, who placed 6th, is still set to run at Aintree and currently has a price of 66/1.
Until 2023, the main event featured a field of 40 horses. This figure was reduced to 34 runners in 2024 and this year’s event features the same reduced field size.
Further changes have been made to the race in recent years, including removing solid cores from fences and moving the first fence closer to the start line. The length of the race has also been reduced.
Critics claim that changes have reduced the unpredictability of one of the biggest and most exciting races in the calendar, with horses from the biggest stables now the most likely to win.
The three remaining horses, who are on the cut line are:
- Duffle Coat
- Shakem Up’Arry
- Roi Mage
All three have been given a weight of 10st 4lb. On Thursday, when the final list is revealed, the horse with the highest handicap at that time will be given the nod.
If two or more horses have the same handicap level, a random ballot will determine which horse takes to the field.
