Son Heung-min next club odds: Return to Leverkusen among options

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min will be allowed to leave the club for an acceptable fee, according to recent media reports.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed a goal-laden decade at Spurs – scoring 173 times in 454 appearances.

Now, with 12 months left on his contract, club owner Daniel Levy is open to offloading the South Korean international after the team’s upcoming tour of Son’s homeland in late July.

A list of potential suitors has already been amassed by the UK’s best bookmakers, with intercontinental moves likely…

Any Saudi Arabian team – 4/9 (Sky Bet)

The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) fuels transfers undertaken by Al Ahli, Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Al Ittihad – allowing all four clubs to meet significant asking prices set by European clubs.

This week, the BBC has reported that Daniel Levy will only listen to offers “way above Son’s valuation” in order for a move to materialise.

Such a proposition would not stand in the way of PIF-funded outfits, as demonstrated by big money transfers involving Aleksander Mitrovic, Ruben Neves and Neymar in recent years.

At 4/9, both Sky Bet and Paddy Power anticipate Son to follow in the footsteps of the aforementioned trio.

So, could Son’s potential arrival break the Saudi Arabian transfer record this summer?

Fenerbahce – 15/8 (Paddy Power)

Former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho is currently employed by Fenerbahce, presenting an opportunity for Son to rekindle a relationship with the two-time Champions League winner.

However, the Turkish outfit’s transfer budget may barricade any agreement. Thus, it will likely take some amount of convincing on Son’s behalf to allay Levy’s weighty demands.

Or, the longstanding Spurs owner could opt to avoid losing Son on a free transfer in 2026 by signing a below-value deal with Fenerbahce later in the window.

This one comes in at 15/8 with Paddy Power.

Any MLS Club – 3/1 (Sky Bet)

The MLS has become something of a retirement home for older footballers – and Son Heung-min will turn 33 years old before the end of this transfer window.

Though he has lost a yard of pace, Son would likely suit the style of play in North America’s most prestigious football league, as proven by the likes of Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry.

However, Spurs’ insistence that interested clubs must pay above Son’s valuation means that many MLS teams will struggle to land the winger.

Bayer Leverkusen – 7/2 (Paddy Power)

A romantic return to Bayer Leverkusen is certainly on the cards – especially with the German side’s newfound funds; the sales of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz to Liverpool have bolstered the transfer budget for 2024’s Bundesliga champions.

Son scored 29 goals in two seasons for Leverkusen before departing for London in 2015.

It does appear that the stars have aligned to allow for this switch – but it is equally likely that all parties will wait until Son’s contract expires next summer.
