Odds on who will replace Wayne Rooney as Plymouth’s manager

Following on from a nine-game losing streak Plymouth and their manager, ex Manchester United player Wayne Rooney, have mutually agreed to part ways.

The club are currently at the bottom of the Championship and are at risk of being relegated if they lose another game, so they are now on the hunt for their next manager. Further, under Roonet, the club has only won four league wins out of 23 Championship games, so it’s time for some new guidance.

Their newest recruit will be the club’s third manager in eight months, and it will be a big task for them as Plymouth currently have the joint-lowest number of goals in the Championship and conceded more points than any other team across England’s top four leagues; so bouncing back won’t be easy.

As interim, club captain Joe Edwards and first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell will manage for Plymouth's New Year's Day match against Bristol City.

Currently Steven Schumacher has the highest odds on replacing Rooney with odds of 1/2 (with talkSPORT BET), and with Schumacher having already managed the Argyles, and having earned himself the ‘League One Manager of the Year’ title during that period, he stands to be a firm choice.

Behind Schumacher is Ryan Lowe (4/1), Lowe has also worked with Plymouth before and was replaced by Schumacher. Lowe left Preston in August, so is currently open for work.

Coming in at third favourite is Tony Mowbray at 8/1. Mowbray has replaced Rooney once before, and what’s stopping him from doing it again? Mowbray took over at Birmingham but had to withdraw due to health reasons, so if he is on a positive trajectory with his health we could well see him as a strong contestant to being the new Plymouth manager.

Also in the mix are the likes of John Terry with odds of 25/1, Steven Gerrard (33/1) and Darren Ferguson (33/1) among others.

Odds come from talkSPORT BET and are accurate at the time of writing.
