Entain announces the Grand National as the most bet-on sporting event of 2024

Global betting giant, and owners of the likes of BetMGM and Ladbrokes, Entain has revealed the biggest sporting events of 2024. They procured the results by using their global sportsbook to identify which events saw the most bets placed.

Coming in at number one was the Aintree Grand National, shortly followed by the Super Bowl LVIII final of 49ers vs Kansas City Chiefs. Besides the Grand National, the NFL, Champions League final, Euro 2024 and golf’s US Masters complete the top 10.

Furthermore, it was also revealed that 82% of people who placed a bet on the Grand National placed a wager of £5 or lower and only 1% of bettors placed a wager exceeding £20.

Greg Ferris, managing director of sport at Entain, said: “Watched by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, the Grand National’s popularity and ability to capture the attention of casual bettors remains undisputed, according to our global sportsbook.

“It was the Euros that really captured the imagination of viewers this year though, with England games still proving a huge draw for recreational betting.”

Other big events that featured in the top 50 included the Cheltenham Gold Cup (16th), and Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul (36th).

However, overall football dominated the top 50 sporting events with the most bets. Football accounted for 68% of the most bet-on events in 2024 globally.
