Joe Root is ranked as joint fourth favourite (80/1) with BetMGM to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for 2024.
The popular England cricketer has made history this year, scoring six Test centuries and overtaking Sir Alastair Cook to become England's all-time leading runscorer and century maker.
But in an Olympic year, the heroes of the Paris Games were always likely to produce the favourite. This year that’s middle-distance runner Keely Hodgkinson, available at 3/10.
Hodgkinson, 22, won the gold medal in the 800 metres event and she also set a new British 800m record of 1:54:61 at a Diamond League meeting in July.
Second favourite to Hodgkinson in the betting, is darts prodigy Luke Littler. The 17-year-old burst onto the scene by reaching the final of the PDC World Darts Championship at the start of the year.
The teenager has gone on to impress throughout the year, winning the Premier League Darts, Grand Slam of Darts and World Series Finals. He is also nominated for the Young Sports Personality of the Year award.
Other contenders include Jude Bellingham, the Real Madrid star who starred in a La Liga and Champions League double-winning campaign for his club before shining as England reached the Euro 2024 final, world and Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee and Paralympics legend Sarah Storey.
