Carlos Alcaraz Wimbledon favourite after convincing Queen's win

World number two Carlos Alcaraz has enjoyed the ideal build-up to Wimbledon, which starts in a week, by winning the Queen’s tournament in London.

The 22-year-old Spaniard beat Roberto Bautista Agut in the semi-final on Saturday, declaring “grass-court mode is activated” and he went on to prove the point by dispatching Jiri Lehecka in the final, winning 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.

After the result, Alcaraz has been installed as the favourite to win this summer’s Wimbledon, having been priced at 6/4, ahead of world number one Jannik Sinner, who is just behind him at odds of 13/8.

Alcaraz is enjoying a rich vein of form. He has featured in the final of the last five ATP events, winning four of them. His only defeat came in April’s Barcelona Open final when he lost to Holger Rune.

Since that defeat, the world number two has now won 18 matches on the bounce. His most significant of those wins came in the French Open, when he overcame Sinner in the final, which lasted five and a half hours. Alcaraz had been two sets down.

Alcaraz has Wimbledon form, too. Having won the US Open in 2022, he took his first Wimbledon title in 2023. In 2024, he not only defended his crown but also became one of just six male players to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season.

Having won the French again this year, Alcaraz now aims to become just the third player to do so more than once – Rafael Nadal and Bjorn Borg are the other two players to have achieved the feat.

If he does manage to retain his Wimbledon title, Alcaraz would also become just the fifth male player to win three successive Wimbledon titles, after Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.

While everything seems to be pointing in favour of Alcaraz winning his third successive title at SW1, he won’t have it all his own way. Sinner has had a protracted season, having served a WADA doping suspension between 9 February and 4 May, but he has shown impressive form of his own on the courts.

The world number one won the Australian Open in January, and lost to Alcaraz in the finals of the Italian Open and French Open. He lost to Alexander Bublik in the second round of the Halle Open in Germany earlier this month, and that sequence of losses likely features in the bookmaker’s prices. Sinner has been given odds of 13/8 to win his first Wimbledon crown.

Novak Djokovic will also have his sights on Wimbledon and is the third favourite (11/2) in the eyes of bookmakers. Djokovic has enjoyed a quiet build-up to the tournament, which has become his way, but, while the Serb is now 38 years old, he will fancy his chances of winning an eighth title to equal Federer’s record.

Brit Jack Draper has shown some incredible improvement in his form over the past few months. Battling tonsilitis, Draper succumbed to eventual finalist Jiri Lehecka in the semi-final of Queen’s. Although it may be a step too far to take the Wimbledon title, for which he is priced at 9/1, Draper looks certain to improve on his previous best of a second round finish.
