Spain favourites for Women's Euros, ahead of England and France

There is a busy summer calendar of football ahead for punters. As well as the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off at the weekend and runs for a month, the Women’s Euro 2025 starts on 2 July in Switzerland, with FIFA coming under some fire for the fact the two tournaments clash.

Spain are the current favourites to lift the trophy at 2/1. Reigning champions, England, currently sit as 7/2 second favourites along with France, who they have been pitted against in Group D. The rest of the group consists of 14/1 fifth favourites the Netherlands and, in their first appearance at the tournament, 200/1 outsiders Wales.

This year’s tournament runs from Wednesday 2 July to Sunday 27 July with a total of 31 games to be played.

Spain Women (2/1)

The current favourites, Spain Women, showed their mettle in their most recent match, against England. At half time, they trailed 1-0 to an Alessia Russo goal but turned it around thanks to a Claudia Pina double. Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas have won the last four Ballon d’Ors, and make Spain a real threat. However, the Spanish defence can be found wanting against more direct forwards.

England Women (7/2)

The Lionesses have experienced a few retirements and withdrawals in recent weeks, most notably that of Mary Earps. However, she and Fran Kirby were unlikely to be regular starters during the tournament. Nations League results were mixed, beating Spain, and thrashing Portugal and Belgium, but with losses to Spain and Belgium as well as a draw with Portugal.

France Women (7/2)

France won every game in their Nations League campaign and Sandy Baltimore scored five goals in six games. But the dropping of captain and vice-captain Wendie Renard and Eugenie Le Sommer caused some unrest with players as well as fans. They do have a tough group featuring England and Netherlands, but they should have enough, along with England, to get out of the group stage and into the knock-out stages.

Germany Women (9/2)

Like France, Germany topped their group after winning five and drawing one in their Nations League campaign, and they have a striker on a hot streak, in the shape of Lea Schuller. However, there have been some questions over team unity with Felicitas Rauch questioning manager Christian Wuck’s communication when she was dropped from the squad. Their impressive 4-0 win over the Netherlands bodes well when they make it deeper into the tournament and they have every chance of upsetting the favourites.

Netherlands Women (14/1)

The Netherlands had a mixed Nations League campaign. They came second to Germany, in the group, and looked to be contenders after the first four games, when the two teams were equal on points. However, that 4-0 loss to Germany followed an embarrassing draw with Scotland, giving the Scots their only point of the competition. Forward Lineth Beerensteyn was their leading scorer with three goals from four games, but she missed the Scotland game through injury, and they will need her back.

Sweden Women (14/1)

Although Sweden topped their Nations League group, it was far from convincing. Although the Swedes went unbeaten, they drew half of their matches, leaving them with the lowest points of any four team group winners. The team does tend to share the goals, however, which means they may prove more resilient to injuries and individual poor performances.
