All 10 teams in the 2025 Indian Premier League are now firmly into the second half of the group stage and the league table is starting to take shape with the leaders on 12 points and the teams at the bottom way back on four.

But with some sides still having six games to go in this stage and two points covering first to sixth after match 41, no team can ease off.

It is only the top four who will progress through to the play-offs and this currently looks like being one of the closest run IPL group stages in many years.

Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad will both begin their clash on Wednesday with only four points on the board and the loser of that game will be edging ever closer to elimination.

The winners will take plenty of confidence into their next game but will still face an uphill struggle to reel in the likes of Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants who will lockhorns on Sunday and ended Monday six points above the teams struggling at the foot of the table.

Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad preview

Plenty of column inches and podcast minutes have been taken up pointing out the deficiencies in CSK and Sunrisers Hyderabad who have endured torrid campaigns up to this point.

Both got off to winning starts in the 2025 IPL but have since been able to pick up only one further victory while crashing to six defeats!

However, this game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the scene of CSK’s opening game victory, represents an opportunity for one of them to give them a chance of making a dart for the top four over the second half of the league stage.

Sunrisers Hyderabad are yet to pick up a victory in an away game this season with their last win on the road coming in match 35 of 2024. They also have a very poor record in Chepauk, winning only two of their 12 fixtures at the venue and still yet to beat CSK here after five attempts!

But this could be Sunrisers’ best opportunity to do so as some observers are describing this CSK team as their worst in history. The hosts did win their last fixture at the MA Chidambaram but were thrashed by nine wickets with 26 balls remaining six days later in their most recent game.

FIRST’s top tip for Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

Ravindra Jadeja to be Chennai Super Kings’ top bowler - 11/2 with Highbet

The vastly experienced Indian international all-rounder has returned the best bowling figures for CSK in both of their last two games - victory over Lucknow Super Giants and defeat against Mumbai Indians.

Jadeja also has a strong home record in this fixture after conceding exactly 22 runs from four overs in each of his last two matches against Sunrisers at the MA Chidambaram while picking up a combined four wickets.

Mumbai Indians vs Lucknow Super Giants preview

With both teams on 10 points from nine games, some might expect a tight contest between Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday evening.

But scratch a little bit under the surface and any sports fan will see that it is the hosts who come into the game with momentum while Lucknow have been stumbling.

Mumbai won with 26 balls remaining for the second successive match when they swept aside Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets on Wednesday to make it four victories in a row for the first time since the 2020 IPL, a tournament they went on to win.

In the opposite corner, Lucknow Super Giants have lost two of their last three with only a two run victory over the hapless Rajasthan Royals to show for their efforts from match 30 onwards.

It is certainly Mumbai who have the stronger form and look like they would be a handful for any opposition at present, but don’t be surprised to see Lucknow stand up against them.

Rishabh Pant’s side did just that in match 16 when they successfully defended a target of 204 and on Sunday will be aiming for a fourth head to head victory in a row.

FIRST’s top tip for Mumbai Indians vs Lucknow Super Giants

Rohit Sharma to be top batter in the match - 5/1 with Highbet

There’s an old saying in sport that ‘class is permanent’ which gets wheeled out whenever a veteran player ends a run of poor form with a valuable contribution.

At 37 years old, Rohit has nothing left to prove to anyone but he has shown that he is still capable of winning games with scores of 76 not out and 70 at the top of the order in Mumbai’s last two matches.

Extra tips

Shivam Dube to be Chennai Super Kings’ top batter (vs Sunrisers Hyderabad) - 11/2 with Highbet

With a faltering top order, the 31 year old left-hander has faced 27 balls or more in the last four games despite batting at number four or five.

He’s been in good form as well, scoring between 31 and 50 runs in each of those four innings and finishing as CSK’s highest run scorer in two of them.

Dube also enjoyed his two clashes against Sunrisers in 2024, scoring 45 from 24 balls in Hyderabad and 39 not out from 20 deliveries in Chennai.

Aiden Markram to be Lucknow Super Giants’ top batter (vs Mumbai Indians) - 6/1 with Highbet

In a team with Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh, the South African opener has his work cut out to keep up with two excellent white ball batters.

But he has matched the pair so far in this campaign with four half-centuries, two of which have come in the last two games.

Markram will also be relishing the chance to take on Mumbai’s bowlers again after hitting 53 from 38 balls in Lucknow earlier this month!

Odds correct at the time of writing.
