As the 2025 Flat season hurtles towards the final furlong action in Newmarket switches from the July Course back on to the Rowley Mile for the three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting.

While the event starts low-key it steadily builds up into a crescendo culminating with two Group One contests, the Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Cheveley Park Stakes and the Tattersalls Middle Park Stakes on Saturday.

Not only will some of the top two-year-olds strut their stuff on Saturday, but there is also the small matter of the bet365 Cambridgeshire to solve, a race in which four of the last five winners have started at odds of 20-1 or bigger making a race that value can be found.

Day One

The Group Three Tattersalls Stakes is the highlight on the opening day of the meeting where a field of eight will bid to potentially enhance their Classic claims for next year.

Distant Storm looked an impressive juvenile when winning on the July Course before proving too keen when sent off favourite for the Group Three Tattersalls Acomb Stakes at York.

He is one of two runners in the race for Charlie Appleby, who is always to be feared with whatever he runs on the Rowley Mile, alongside recent Yarmouth scorer Catullus.

In the Listed Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes last year’s German Derby winning Palladium is likely to be all the rage after getting back on track last time out with a clearcut win in the Weatherbys Stallion Book Persian Punch Conditions Stakes.

While he has stamina to prove over this trip on the Flat he could be a class above his rivals.

FIRST’s top tip

Pick: Wechaad to win the Tattersalls Stakes at 7/1 (Coral)

Distant Storm is likely to prove popular to get back on track given how he won on Debut, however if he pulls too hard like he did at York that could open the door for Wechaad.

Having improved with each run the Roger Varian-trained colt posted an impressive victory on his handicap debut at Doncaster last time out when making lightwork of a mark of 82.

This represents an altogether different test, but the manner in which he won last time suggests he is a potential Group racehorse and he can demonstrate that here.

The Varian team are currently operating well above the 20 per cent strike rate mark which further helps his chances on conditions which should be ideal.

Extra tips

Dark Shore was well fancied to make a winning debut down at Ascot, but he could only fifth on that occasion, however that was behind Words Of Truth, who has since gone on to taste Group Two glory in the Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes.

In his two subsequent starts he has finished second, latterly behind Into The Sky, runner-up in the same Group Two, which suggests that he should be able to make his presence felt off an opening mark of 78.

Pick: Dark Shore to win the 14:25 - Federation Of Bloodstock Agents Nursery Handicap - 5/2 (Coral)

Arabian Leopard has proven a model of consistency and she can gain a much deserved second success of the campaign back at the scene of her previous victory in May.

That win was achieved over seven furlongs, however she has proven equally competitive since being dropped back to six furlongs on her last three starts.

Armed with an extra two pounds pulled in the weights with her previous conqueror Angel Shared for a length defeat, the daughter of Ghaiyyath can exact her revenge here.

Pick: Arabian Leopard to win the British Stallion Studs EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap at 6/1 (Betfred)

Day Two

Things start to ramp up a bit on day two of the meeting with no fewer than Group Races and two Listed contests on the seven race card.

The highlight is the Group Two BoyleSports Home Of The Early Payout Rockfel Stakes in which the Owen Burrows-trained Touleen will bid to maintain her unbeaten record.

In the other Group Two, the BoyleSports Daily Racing Rewards Joel Stakes, all eyes will be on the Charlie Appleby-trained Opera Ballo, who will bid to make it five wins from six starts.

While the BoyleSports Smart Race Card Godolphin Stakes is only a Listed contest paper it is arguably the most intriguing race of the day with the totally unexposed By The Book from the Appleby team taking on last year’s Hardwicke Stakes hero Isle Of Jura.

FIRST’s top tip

Pick: Touleen to win the Boylesports Home Of The Early Payout Rockfel Stakes - 5/4 (Coral)

Owen Burrows knows the time of day when he has got a smart one and Touleen looks like another Group race winner waiting to happen amongst his ranks.

She managed to overturn the re-opposing Zanthos, who was an impressive winner on her debut at the July Course, in decisive fashion at Leicester last time out.

While this is a different track altogether the way in how Touleen finished that day suggests that the form should stand up.

While Burrows does not have the numbers of some of his counterparts his record in pattern races is exceptional which further heightens interest in Touleen.

Conditions should be ideal, and provided she handles the track, which is not certain, the daughter of Lope De Vega should be hard to beat.

Extra tips

Never Let Go was an impressive winner of the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot and she was far from disgraced upped to Listed level in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Dick Hern Stakes at Haydock Park last time out.

On that occasion, she stuck to the task well enough to fill the runner-up spot, but the winner was given a perfect ride from the front.

Back over a straight mile with a good pace to aim will suit her better and she should be in the shake-up.

Pick: Never Let Go to win the BoyleSports British EBF Rosemary Stakes -  7/1 (Coral)

By The Book has only had the two career starts to date, but he has won both in the style of a horse that could have untapped potential.

Although not sighted for 295 days the form of his last win reads well with the runner-up Plage De Havre now rated 103.

Strictly on ratings he has a bit to find with some smart performers, however it is interesting that connections have pitched him into a Listed race on his return opposed to looking at a handicap.

This will be his first start over a mile and a half, but given the way he won last time he should have no issues with the trip.

Pick: By The Book to win the BoyleSports Smart Race Card Godolphin Stakes - 2/1 (Coral)

Day Three

The final day of the meeting is when the action really ramps up a notch with the Group One Tattersalls Middle Park Stakes and the Group One Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Cheveley Park Stakes.

Added to that more Classic clues are likely to be found in the Group Two Tattersalls Online Royal Lodge Stakes which has attracted a whole host of intriguing contenders, including unbeaten colts Bow Echo and Ancient Egypt.

The puzzle that is the bet365 Cambridgeshire looks as tricky as ever to be solved, but there could be some potential Group races horses lurking among the ranks including Treble Tee and Fort George.

Pick: Bow Echo to win the Tattersalls Online Royal Lodge Stakes at 6/4 (Betway)

In his two starts to date Bow Echo has looked to possess that touch of star quality that could take him straight to the top.

On his debut at Newbury he was mighty impressive in how he travelled with ease through the race before readily putting it to bed.

Upped to Listed company in the Betting.Betfair Ascendant Stakes he again put in a solid display when getting better of the equally well-regarded Publish.

On that occasion he showed his battling qualities after briefly being headed before drawing away again close home.

Having shown he handles the Rowley Mile after impressing in a recent racecourse gallop the son of Night Of Thunder can sign off his season in style with win number three over a trip he has already shown he gets.

Extra tips

True Love suffered a shock odds-on defeat behind Power Blue on her last start, but it was reported she showed signs of lameness on that occasion which makes her worth another go here.

Prior to her shock defeat the Aidan O’Brien-trained filly had looked mighty impressive when readily casting aside Power Blue in the Group Two GAIN Railway Stakes at the Curragh and at the same level in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

On numerous occasions well fancied runners from the O’Brien yard have bounced back from a disappointing reversal and the daughter of No Nay Never can be another to give the Ballydoyle master a record extending sixth win in the race.

Pick: True Love to win the Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Cheveley Park Stakes at 3/1 (Betfred)

In recent seasons sticking a pin in the bet365 Cambridgeshire and plucking a horse at random might have been the best way of finding a winner given some of the return starting prices of the winners, but Treble Tee can buck the trend.

Last season the son of Persian King looked a potential Classic contender when winning a seven furlong novice on the Rowley Mile.

However, things failed to go right for him in the spring, but after being given a gelding operation and a short break he looks to now be heading back in the right direction.

After running out a ready winner at Doncaster he was hiked up eight pounds, but he runs in this off a four pounds penalty, which means he is technically well in for this.

In a race like this luck will be needed in running, but having shown he can handle the track he can land this on route to bigger and better things.

Pick: Treble Tee to win the the bet365 Cambridgeshire at 5/1 (Coral)
