Ted's Treble - racing picks from the action at Newmarket

Newmarket - 3.00 Spring Bloom e/w - 6/1 (Betfred)

The Robert Eddery-trained SPRING BLOOM has to be taken seriously at this venue, and now back over 6f, he looks a very solid each-way player here. The eight-year-old has been a little frustrating in recent times, but with two previous course and distance wins on the CV, this can see him right back in the thick of things.

Last time out, he ran a solid race over the minimum distance at this track, staying on inside the closing stages to grab fourth, beaten less than two lengths at the line. That suggests a return to 6f is what is required these days, and eased to an official rating of 74, the handicapper is giving him every chance of getting involved at the business end of proceedings.

Richard Kingscote is in the saddle, and this combination gets the nod from me, where another win at the headquarters of flat racing would be far from a shock.

Newmarket - 4.10 Two Tribes - 10/3 (Ladbrokes)

TWO TRIBES has been hitting the crossbar in recent times, but looks to have a good opportunity here to get back to winning ways. He has been producing some decent efforts in defeat, including at Doncaster last time out when stepping up to 7f for the first time.

Two Tribes would have got much more cover on his first start at that distance, and probably got towards the front too soon. Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle, and I would imagine that Two Tribes will be ridden with much more restraint, with the top pilot taking over the steering.

The Richard Spencer-trained four-year-old has shaped on more than one occasion as though this trip can bring out the best in him. Off a mark of 90, he could still have more to offer, with underfoot conditions that should be spot-on for him.

Newmarket - 4.45 Orange Sky - 9/4 (10bet)

I like the claims of Handicap debutant ORANGE SKY here for the George Boughey stable. This lightly-raced sort delves into Handicap company for the first time after just three career starts, and looks a major force in this fillies' encounter.

The daughter of No Nay Never has shaped as though this step up to 1m will be of real benefit, as we saw when winning over a stiff 7f at Newcastle on her penultimate start. She was entitled to strip a lot fitter for her recent comeback at the same venue, when she was beaten as a 4/6f and was a little free in the early stages.

She should be a lot straighter for that outing, and I expect an improved display here. Off a BHA mark of 80, she is open to any amount of improvement and can thrive in this scenario. 

Ed will be back on Saturday as we gear up for what should be a cracking afternoon of racing.
