Victoria Corbishley announced as newly-appointed CEO of GamCare
UK gambling charity GamCare have appointed Victoria Corbishley as their new CEO. Corbishley will take over from interim CEO D’Arcy Myers, who had been in the role since August 2023; following the resignation of former CEO Anna Hemmings two months earlier.
Speaking of her new role, Corbishley said: “I am honoured to join GamCare at this crucial time. Last year alone, GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline received over 55,000 calls and online chats.
“The charity also directly delivered more than 9,100 structured treatment sessions, referred over 7,100 individuals to other regional support providers and 64,000 people participated in the charity’s education programmes.
“These numbers highlight the essential role GamCare plays in supporting those affected by gambling harms, and reinforce our commitment to accessible, high-quality care.
“My focus will be on ensuring GamCare remains a leader in delivering life-changing interventions while working closely with partners across the NHS and wider sector to shape the future of gambling harm prevention treatment.”
Corbishley brings a wealth of experience in the healthcare sector, having previously served as senior director of health and care at the British Red Cross. She has also endured multiple roles within the NHS earlier in her career.
Her previous roles leave her in a strong position to oversee the charity, which aims to provide support and advice for individuals struggling with gambling problems.
Founded in 1997, GamCare operates a 24/7 Helpline and provides both individual and group therapy for those suffering. The charity reported a record 55,228 calls and online chats in their annual report for 2023-24, which was a 25% increase on the figures from the previous year.
As highlighted by Corbishley, GamCare also stated that over 9,100 free treatment sessions were administered within that period, averaging a mere waiting time of 2.1 days from point of referral.
A key responsibility for Corbishley will be collaborating with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), which was appointed as the new prevention commissioner for gambling harms by the UK Government earlier this month.
OHID will also work with NHS England and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) in order to develop further strategies aimed at reducing harm caused by problematic gambling.
GamCare welcomed the appointment with their own statement two weeks prior to Corbishley’s appointment.
GamCare's chair of the board, Margot Daly, insists Corbishley’s prior experience will enable their mission to tackle gambling harms in 2025 and beyond.
Daly said: “As GamCare navigates the evolving landscape, Victoria’s leadership will be instrumental in strengthening our collaborations with the NHS as well as UKRI and OHID as the new prevention commissioner.
“Her strategic mindset, operational expertise, and commitment to innovation align perfectly with our mission. I look forward to working with Victoria as we continue to expand GamCare’s impact and ensure our services remain responsive to the needs of those we support”.
