SNOW DAY: Will we see snow in the UK on Christmas Day?

Will we have a white Christmas this year? As the cold snap closes in, it poses the question of whether we will see snowfall on Christmas Day?

Technically, 2023 was the last white Christmas in the UK with 11% of stations recording snow falling, although none reported any snow lying on the ground.

However, it was 14 (FOURTEEN) years ago the last time the UK saw widespread coverage that settled. The Met Office reported that only on four occasions since 1960 this has been the case; 1981, 1995, 2009 and 2010.

But could 2024 be next? BetMGM have drawn up the odds, with a high chance of snowfall in Scotland on 25 December. 

Edinburgh leads the market with a 33.3% implied probability at 2/1, with Scotland’s capital Glasgow close behind at 3/1.

That’s north of the border, but about what down south? London props up the market at a lengthy 10/1 - with many Londoners opting to leave England’s capital for the festive season, searching for a wintery wonderland either in the UK or abroad.

While Birmingham joins London at 10s, it’s Liverpool and Leeds at 5/1, where we’re most likely to see a white Christmas. Cardiff and Manchester are both locked together at 6/1 and Bristol at 13/2. 

The official word via their Met Office website says for a ‘white Christmas’ to be declared, a single snowflake has to be observed falling on the 24 hours of 25 December, by either an official Met Office observer or by a Met Office automated weather station.
