A new format will see 48 nations compete, instead of the usual 32, with the expanded tournament resulting in an extra 24 games compared to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The top two teams from each of the 12 groups will qualify for the knockout stage, including a new round of 32, in addition to the eight best third-placed countries.
A different option of 16 groups of three had been mooted, but FIFA decided to stick with the familiar four-team groups. More games will mean more goals, but it remains to be seen if the 48-team format will be viewed as a success.
England fans will be expecting to traverse the Atlantic to cheer on the Three Lions with Thomas Tuchel, the latest coach tasked to lead the team to elusive glory.
The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss is the successor to Gareth Southgate, who guided England to successive European Championship final appearances, with his World Cup record showing a semi-final defeat to Croatia in Russia 2018 and a quarter-final defeat to France in Qatar in 2022.
The early odds from Ladbrokes sees England ranked at odds of 13/2 to go all the way to the final in New Jersey, USA and lift the World Cup trophy for the first time since the home victory of 1966.
