Iga Swiatek favourite to win tomorrow's Wimbledon women's final

This year’s Wimbledon ladies’ singles will see a first-time winner crowned champion for the eighth straight edition as former world number 1 Iga Swiatek faces 23-year-old American Amanda Anisimova, who went out in last year’s Wimbledon qualifiers.

Swiatek is viewed as the favourite, having been given odds of 2/5 to emerge victorious. Underdog Anisimova is 7/4 to lift her first major.

Swiatek took over the world number 1 spot in April 2022: a position she retained for 100 weeks. Despite falling to her current position as world number 4, the Pole has enjoyed her best ever grass court season.

Following her semi-final win, she has a season record of 9-1 on grass. Just two weeks ago, she made her first-ever grass-court final in Bad Homburg, although she did lose to Jessica Pegula. This week, she has played in her first-ever Wimbledon semi-final. Her previous best at SW1 came in 2023 when she lost in the quarter final to Elina Svitolina.

This tournament, Swiatek has only dropped a single set on her way to the final, which she lost to former doubles partner Caty McNally in the second round, and she has beaten three top 35 players on an otherwise unscathed run to tomorrow’s main event.

Swiatek’s opponent tomorrow is 23-year-old American Amanda Anisimova. Anisimova was considered a prodigious talent in her younger years, reaching junior world number 2. At just 17 years of age, she reached the semi-finals of the French Open. Two years ago, she walked away from the sport, taking a seven-month mental-health break. She returned to the circuit last year, but lost in the third round of the Wimbledon qualifiers.

Anisimova was warned that taking such a long break away from the court would cost her, and said she would struggle to return to her previous form. However, after reaching last month’s Queens final, the American has enjoyed excellent form in this year’s Wimbledon, capped off when she beat world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the final.

Only one other player in the Open era has gone on to feature in a Grand Slam final the year after going out in the qualifiers, and the feat has never been achieved at Wimbledon.

She puts a lot of her revival down to taking breaks after tournaments, saying: “Just me being able to prove that you can get back to the top if you prioritise yourself has been incredibly special to me.”

Anisimova and Swiatek have never played on the senior tour, but the two did play, when juniors, in 2016. Swiatek emerged victorious in that match, helping Poland beat the United States in a Junior Fed Cup match.

Bookmakers believe Swiatek has enough to hold the American off again, giving her odds of 2/5 to win her first grass-court major. Anisimova is 7/4 to lift her first tournament. Regardless of which of the two wins, Wimbledon will see another new champion this year.
