Next permanent France manager betting odds: Zidane lined up to replace Deschamps
Didier Deschamps will call time on his tenure as France manager after the 2026 World Cup.
Appointed in 2012, the 56-year-old has enjoyed a successful period at the helm of his national side.
Victory at the 2018 World Cup saw France achieve worldwide glory for the first time since 1998, while the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League win confirmed that Deschamps’ men were still hungry for further silverware.
Now, in the wake of 2022’s World Cup Final defeat, Euro 2024 disappointment and 2025 UEFA Nations League failure – the veteran coach believes it is time for a new chapter.
And, according to BetVictor, a few unexpected options are in line to replace him…
Zinedine Zidane – 6/4
Although ‘Zizou’ has only managed one club in a decidedly short coaching career, his propensity for silverware speaks to inarguable esteem as a leader.
Now 53 years old, Zidane stands as BetVictor’s most likely replacement for Deschamps (6/4) – and he has already stated that managing the national team would be a “dream” job that he “cannot wait” to take.
Thus, it is less a question of whether Zidane is keen to take the job, but more about whether France want the legendary footballing figure.
Gareth Southgate – 8/1
The recently knighted Sir Gareth Southgate is BetVictor’s second favourite to take over from Deschamps.
Although unlikely at first glance, there are a few factors that may play into the former England manager’s hands.
For one, Southgate has led multiple international squads to near-success during transitional periods.
Moreover, the 54-year-old’s calm demeanour and tactical ideology align with Deschamps’ style – as neither manager is known for overseeing overly exciting football.
It’s a long shot at 8/1, but Southgate could be open to the position in 2026 after two years without a managerial role.
Jose Mourinho – 10/1
Since 2016, virtually every team managed by Jose Mourinho has cut ties with the 62-year-old in damning fashion.
He was relieved of his duties at Manchester United, Spurs and, more recently, Roma – with club owners struggling to tame ‘The Special One’ and all that comes with his hiring.
Mourinho currently operates at Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Lig, but even in a country where he is a monumentally dominant figure, the Portuguese native has found himself embroiled in controversy with the division’s higher-ups.
Nevertheless, the French Football Federation may opt to install the three-time Premier League champions in a bid to reshuffle the squad’s current mindset.
BetVictor have this one at 10/1.
Alternative options for France
Compared to club football, international management is a relaxed affair.
Fewer games, infrequent drama and the lack of transfer window anxiety all play a part in this laid-back feel – making it an ideal venture for those searching for a job that promises potential glory without overbearing stress.
Hence, Jurgen Klopp (14/1) could be the perfect fit.
Or, Pep Guardiola (12/1) might consider joining France as an excellent digestif upon departing Manchester City.
Herve Renard is another name that has been mooted as a potential successor to Deschamps. He has worked within the French Football Federation previously as manager of the women’s national team – so 14/1 with BetVictor on the current Saudi Arabian boss may represent solid value.
