Americans are set to wager a record £1.12bn on Superbowl LIX, according to the AGA (American Gaming Association), as the betting market continues to expand across the country.

This weekend’s game, between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles at the Caesars Superdome, has highlighted the growth of legal betting since its legalisation and reintroduction in 2018.

AGA President and CEO Bill Miller expressed his delight with the estimated figures, stating: “No single event unites sports fans like the Super Bowl, and that excitement extends to sports betting, with this year’s record legal handle reflecting its widespread appeal.

“This figure underscores the positive impact of the legal market—from protecting consumers to generating tax revenue that benefits communities across the country—while enhancing the game experience for all.”

Americans have shown support for legal betting, with a recent survey conducted by the AGA reflecting 75% of those in favour of legal sports wagering in their home states, while 90% view it as an acceptable form of entertainment.

Super Bowl LVIII, which took place between the Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, saw 67.78 million American adults place bets on the game, according to the AGA; who have changed the way they record figures like this. There are many markets available, which enhances the excitement of the betting experience; such as seven of the craziest pop bets to make on the Super Bowl LIX this weekend.

In previous years, they would focus on the amount of people betting across regulated and unregulated markets. This included off-the-books betting pools with family and friends. This year, the AGA has just accounted for bets made at legal bookmakers; which means the number from previous years may be higher, but they are not representative of the actual legal betting market.

Research from Eilers and Krejick Gaming Consulting and Market Research shows that an estimated £1.01bn was placed legally on last year’s event, showing a big increase for Sunday’s game.

Legal sports betting is now available in 39 of the 50 states, in some format, having been made illegal in 1992 by PASPA (The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992), and was unchallenged until 2018, when the Supreme Court struck it down, citing it as a violation of state rights.

This decision has seen a complete rise in betting across the country, with it estimated that American bookmakers handled £104.69bn in bets in 2024, an approximate 8% increase from 2023.

American football bettors will be hoping to keep the momentum they gained at the end of 2024, as the state of Nevada reported that they lost a staggering £4.27m on NFL and college football bets for that month, which was the biggest loss for bookmakers in that state since 2012.

According to BetMGM trading manager Christian Cipollini, the Eagles money line at 110+ (at time of writing) is the most popular bet across the USA, with Chiefs tight-end Travis Kelce and Eagles running back Saquon Barkley the two most bet-on players ahead of the game.

It has been expected that for the first time in history, New York will overtake Nevada in regards to Super Bowl betting activity, with the Empire State only missing out last time due to the game being played in Las Vegas, and with the event being hosted in New Orleans this year, the Empire State may become the American hotspot for sports betting.
