Tottenham target other deals with Bryan Mbeumo set on Man Utd
The Bryan Mbeumo summer transfer saga has taken another twist as Tottenham have reportedly abandoned hope of signing the Brentford forward. Spurs are said to have conceded defeat to the player’s openly stated desire to move to Old Trafford.
According to earlier reports, personal terms have been agreed between the club and the Red Devils, and it is just a matter of the club coming to a deal with Brentford. Bookmakers Ladbrokes have slashed the odds of a transfer to the red half of Manchester to 1/4 as a result.

United took advantage of this season’s first-ever mini-transfer window. Although it was designed primarily for the benefit of teams competing in the FIFA Club World Cup, which United missed out on, they jumped at the opportunity of completing a £62.5million deal to take Brazilian Matheus Cunha from Wolves.
They failed, however, to finalize a deal for Cameroonian national Mbeumo. An initial bid worth a reported £55m was rejected by Brentford, who value the player at closer to £70m. Not to be deterred, United have reportedly been negotiating with the Bees since.
The ongoing negotiations did hit a bit of a potential barrier when manager Thomas Frank left Brentford to join Spurs, who beat United in the Europa League final to book a place in next season’s Champions League. Frank demanded that Spurs rival the Red Devils for Mbeumo’s signature.
However, according to the most recent reports, Mbeumo has his heart set on Old Trafford, and not even the potential to play under Frank in the Champions League is enough to deter him. The bookmakers do still give Spurs an outside chance, but Ruben Amorim is favourite to land the striker.
Odds on Mbeumo’s next club, from Ladbrokes, correct at the time of writing:
Mbeumo Next Club | Odds |
Manchester United | 1/4 |
Tottenham | 2/1 |
Arsenal | 25/1 |
Chelsea | 25/1 |

With Mbeumo seemingly out of the picture, Tottenham’s attention will move elsewhere. Last season they finished one place above the relegation zone, although they were some 13 points clear of Leicester. Despite that, they qualified for the Champions League after beating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in Bilbao in May.
United’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe estimated the value of Champions League qualification at around £100m to his club. While Spurs won’t earn as much through sponsorships, gate receipts, or other fees, but are still expected to earn around £50m just for qualifying.
But, their league position shows they need to reinforce in several areas across the pitch.
According to the latest odds, they are in the running to sign Jack Grealish from Manchester City, who has been deemed surplus to requirements by manager Pep Guardiola. They are also among the favourites to sign Eberechi Eze and have an outside chance of adding Mohammed Kudus and Yoann Wissa to their ranks.
Odds on Tottenham signing the following players are from Ladbrokes and were correct at the time of writing:
