Caleb Plant: “Sweethands” needs a convincing victory to set up the Jermell Charlo showdown next
32-year-old former IBF world super-middleweight champion Caleb Plant reigned for over two-and-a-half years during 2019-2021.
He was dethroned by four-weight world champion Saul Canelo Alvarez in their unification clash in November 2021. Canelo backed Caleb up with heavy pressure, which Plant withstood for 11 rounds until he was floored by a big left hook, then stopped shortly afterwards.
Plant’s only other defeat has come at the hands of another Mexican, David Benavidez. Plant’s speed and sharpness controlled the opening rounds, as “The Monster” struggled to close down, corner or catch the Tennessean.
Eventually, however, Benavidez gradually edged closer, landing increasingly bigger blows to slow his man down, winning the fight via unanimous decision, with one scorecard as close as 115-113.
On a more positive note, the former world champ holds impressive victories over Jose Uzcategui, Mike Lee, Caleb Truax, Anthony Dirrell and Trevor McCumby.
Sharing 23 rounds with the likes of Canelo and Benavidez proves what level he is at, which may be one above Resendiz.
Armando Resendiz: Can “Toro” turn this fight into a Mexican war?
Resendiz has already revealed his game plan for this fight. In his own words, he said he will be bringing pressure, energy and heart from the opening bell.
Trained by Manny Robles, he has proven his words already throughout his career. He has a typical Mexican style and mentality. The 26-year-old is very aggressive, powerful and durable, never backing up, trading like for like and leaving everything in the ring.
He demonstrated this in his career-best win over former IBF world super-welterweight champion Jarrett “Swift” Hurd when they fought toe-to-toe over 10 rounds in 2023. The referee had to step in to stop Hurd after his lip was too badly lacerated to continue.

Resendiz has a solid chin to complement his heavy hands. Against undefeated Elijah Garcia, he was dropped heavily by a hellacious right hook in the eighth round, yet remarkably got straight back to his feet to continue, but referee Tony Weeks saved him, knowing he would never quit.
He has firmly stated his intentions to go straight at Plant, giving everything he has got and leaving it all in the ring, so this fight could be fast and furious from the very first bell, if he backs up his words.
Caleb Plant vs Armando Resendiz: The key factors
Plant has the experience over Resendiz, having reigned as world champion already and sharing over an hour in the ring with two pound-for-pound greats.
Resendiz has youth and energy on his side. If he does plan to leave it all in the ring, then Plant is going to be in for one long, tough night.
Plant has a significant height and reach advantage over the challenger, which, if he can utilise, could control the contest.
If he can also use his technical ability to outbox Resendiz from range with those swift, stinging, straight shots down the middle then he could cause a lot of sustained damage over time.
In contrast to that, if Resendiz is able to get in close, backing Plant up to the ropes, then he could turn this boxing contest into a fight, which is where he will be at his best. The Mexican will thrive in a war with Plant, whereas the American will do far better in a technical, boxing match.
So it could come down to who can implement their game plan over the other.
As Plant has been able to fend off Canelo for 11 rounds and Benavidez for a full 12, then his experience should serve him well against this aggressive youngster, but Resendiz is coming with a fire in his belly and a willpower to leave absolutely everything he has got in that ring.
