Marseille vs Newcastle tips and predictions: Visiting goals on the cards at Vélodrome
Marseille state of play
Tuesday’s hosts haven’t yet enjoyed themselves fully in the League Phase of the UEFA Champions League, losing three out of four, which leaves them with work to do down in 25th place.
That’s reflected by the best Champions League betting sites, which currently have Marseille as low as 250/1 to win the trophy.
The team managed by Roberto De Zerbi found it tough to shift through the gears at home to Atalanta when last involved in this competition, losing by a goal to nil in front of a home crowd.
Sure, they were far from outplayed on that occasion, but the host struggled to create, which is a worry given that they’re now up against a Newcastle side that comes off the back of three consecutive clean sheets in the Champions League.
If the men from Marseille were playing on the road, then they really wouldn’t be feeling confident ahead of this game, but they have secured a home win in the competition, beating Ajax in convincing fashion back in late September.
If they can draw on that, then we could see a confident home side take to the pitch at the iconic Stade Vélodrome.

Newcastle state of play
The 2025/26 UEFA Champions League campaign has so far gone quite well for Eddie Howe’s men, who find themselves sitting in a lofty sixth position in the League Phase table, above the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool, Barcelona, Chelsea, Dortmund and Atletico Madrid. Not bad at all.
At this early stage, some of the best UK bookmakers have them at 25/1 to win the whole tournament, including Betfred.
Last time out on the continent, the Magpies delivered a commanding performance against Athletic Bilbao, winning by two goals to nil, dominating the ball from start to finish.
That effort followed their suffocation of Benfica in front of a home crowd, giving Jose Mourinho’s men very little to shout about in an offensive sense.
When they last played on the road in this competition, they trounced Union SG of Belgium, winning on the road, scoring four and conceding none in the process.
We’re now talking about a Newcastle team that has won three UCL games on the spin, scoring no less than nine goals, allowing zero. That’s a team in form.

Key talking point: Greenwood hungry for goals in Europe
Few players have shown a scoring appetite like Marseille’s Mason Greenwood has during the early weeks of the League Phase. The former Manchester United forward has scored only one UCL goal so far this term, but he seems rather keen to add to that, shooting a staggering 18 times in four appearances. That’s a rather chunky average of 5.14 shots per 90 minutes.
FIRST.com’s top tip - Marseille vs Newcastle
Pick: Mason Greenwood to score - 11/5 - (10bet)
As mentioned above, Mason Greenwood has been eager to go for goal on the continent this season, so much so that he’s not only averaging 5.14 shots per 90 minutes, but he’s also averaging 2.29 shots on target per 90. Such stats are hard to ignore.
Capable from range and as someone who runs in behind with ease, Greenwood has the tools to hurt even Newcastle’s sturdy rearguard, and at odds of 11/5, I’m betting on him to find the net.

FACT: Only Kylian Mbappe has taken more shots than Mason Greenwood in the UEFA Champions League this season.
Pick: Newcastle to score over 1.5 goals - 6/5 - (Coral)
We know that Eddie Howe’s men are well-drilled to hit teams on the break, and guarding against the break at home is something that the hosts have struggled to do, so we really shouldn’t be surprised to see the Magpies thrive offensively.
When Atalanata visited Stade Vélodrome, they could easily have scored a second-goal, as the likes of Angers, Le Havre and Paris FC have done in Ligue 1 this season. Consider this in conjunction with Newcastle’s UCL scoring form and odds of 6/5 start to look a little generous.

Team news
Nayef Aguerd has recently been nursing an injury and may not feature for the hosts, who could also be without Amine Gouiri, who is yet to fully recover from a back problem.
The hosts may be without Joelinton, who recently sustained a knock, while Nick Pope may not yet be ready to return either. Anthony Gordon missed the recent international action through injury and remains unclear as to whether the winger will be fit enough for this contest.
