Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Things to consider

The second Signature Event of the year is swiftly upon us and the best players in the world descend on the Monterey Peninsula for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am - the third event of the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing. The field includes the top 50 in last year's FedEx Cup along with numbers 51-60 in the 2024 FedEx Cup Fall standings (Aon Next 10). The ‘Aon Swing 5’ which consists of the top five FedEx Cup points earners from this year's Sony Open, American Express and Farmers Insurance Open will also tee it up.

Harris English (70/1 BetMGM) was the victor last week at a windy Torrey Pines and earns himself a spot in the field. All 2025 tournament winners will be automatically exempt into Signature Events. Seven hundred FedEx Cup points are on offer to the Pebble Beach Pro-Am winner and the total purse this week is $20m (£16m).

Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Top of the market

Leading the market is the returning Scottie Scheffler (11/2 BetMGM) who tees it up for the first time this year following a minor surgery on his hand. Scheffler wrapped up last year with a win in the Hero World Challenge. Next in the market is Rory McIlroy (11/1 Spreadex) who is easing himself into the 2025 golf season. Ludvig Aberg and Collin Morikawa were two players affected by flu last week at Torrey Pines but are fit to tee off. California man Xander Schauffele has not made it due to injury.

Last year Wyndham Clark shot a third-round unofficial course record 12-under par and was declared the winner after the event was then reduced to 54 holes. Preferred lies had been in play on the rain-softened Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill courses until heavy rain and high winds on the Sunday shortened the event. The defending champ comes in at odds of 50/1 with Spreadex. Previous Pebble Beach Pro-Am winner Jordan Spieth (50/1 Betway) also makes his return this week.

Winner of the AMEX Sepp Straka comes into the Pebble Beach Pro-Am betting at 50/1 (Betway) while Nick Taylor is worth a mention having won the Sony Open a few weeks ago and the Pebble Beach Pro-Am back in 2020. Sungjae Im (28/1 BetMGM) has returned to form of late and his price catches the eye in the top tier of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am betting odds.

The two courses, Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill play to an average of 7,000 yards and both are a par 72. Fairways are generous at the host course which is Pebble Beach and greens are Poa Annua on both tracks. Emphasis this week will be on approach play and short game while strong wind players may come to the fore if the breeze gets up.

Jason Day didn't quite have his A game at the Farmers Insurance, but he is trending strongly, and he loves the two courses in play this week on the Monterey Peninsula. Day is a Poa Annua specialist with a string of top 10 and top five finishes at Pebble. The Aussie shot a third-round 9-under par at a benign Pebble Beach last year en route to a tied-sixth finish. He was recently third at the AMEX. The short-game wizard ranked 9th in ‘strokes gained putting’ last year.

Tom Hoge is a former winner of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and he is simmering nicely form-wise. Hoge backed up his 2022 win here with a t6 last season to demonstrate a strong course fit. Hoge was fourth in approach play and 17th in ‘proximity to the hole’ last season and he ranked third in ‘total birdies’ which is a good stat ahead of a low-scoring event. Tom went to college in Texas and has strong wind pedigree. He comes here with a simmering form line of t8, t45, t29.

Maverick McNealy is a California man and Stanford University grad with a fifth place and a runner-up finish to his name at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He came oh-so-close to winning here in 2021 when he was pipped by wind specialist Daniel Berger. The 29-year-old finally got his maiden PGA Tour win at last year's RSM Classic. McNealy opened this season with a tied-8th finish at the Sentry.

FIRST’s top tip for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Jason Day is a West Coast specialist who thrives in windy conditions and on Poa Annua greens. He’s trending nicely and he’s 33/1 (six places) with BetMGM to win the tournament.

Extra tips

Former AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am winner Tom Hoge is flying under the radar somewhat. He has all the right tools for the upcoming test and can be backed each way (six places) at 80/1 with Spreadex.

Home man Maverick McNealy has been playing some of the best golf of his life over the past 12 months. Back him to continue the trend at 55/1 (six places) with BetMGM.

Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Value bets

With players at the front of the Pebble Beach betting market being a little rusty and lacking game time it might be worth looking at some rank outsiders to take them on.

Keith Mitchell’s game is trending in the right direction, and he owns 12th and fourth-place finishes here at Pebble Beach in the last three years. Mitchell is a specialist ball striker who resides on the windy Sea Island. The 33-year-old ranked 12th in approach shots in 2024 and he was 15th in the ‘ball striking’ metric. Mitchell comes to Pebble Beach off the back of progressive t30, t21 finishes.

Mark Hubbard has progressive form here of 55-33-20-4 and will be buoyed by good memories having proposed to his wife behind the 18th hole at Pebble Beach (she said yes!). The 35-year-old is an underrated player with a 12th place and a 21st place finish already under his belt in 2025. He was tied for third in Bermuda at the back end of last year. Although Hubbard is yet to win on the PGA Tour, a ranking of 22nd in ‘strokes-gained approach’ might help propel him to another high finish on the leader board to add to his fourth-place finish at Pebble Beach last year.

FIRST’s top value tips for the Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Keith Mitchell is a player who excels in the wind and owns some sneaky course and current form. Back him each way at 125/1 (six places with Spreadex).

Mark Hubbard may draw motivation from good memories and form at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Back the American each way at 125/1 with BetMGM.
