ATP Barcelona Open betting preview: Alcaraz to go back-to-back on clay?

The triumphant return to form of Carlos Alcaraz at the Monte Carlo Masters last week was a stark reminder of the Spaniard’s incredible clay-court prowess.

World number three Alcaraz breezed to success in the principality, encountering very few problems along the way and he arrives in Barcelona as the man to beat.

Having won this event in both 2022 and 2023, Alcaraz is developing a special relationship with this event in his homeland, but he has some way to go to overhaul Rafael Nadal’s tally of 11 Barcelona Open titles.

Grand Slam season is around the corner, with the French Open on the horizon and Alcaraz and the chasing pack will be looking to find form on the ‘dirt’ here in the Catalonian sunshine.

The favourites

While big ATP 500 events can in theory be won by anybody, anything other than a Carlos Alcaraz triumph in this field would be deemed as a shock.

Clay is very much his game and while he endured a tough start to 2025, he looks to have put his injury issues behind him and recently stated that the return to clay has given him a much needed boost this season.

As the top seed here in Barcelona, he is the man to beat, and he is 5/4 to lift the trophy with Mr.Play.

Casper Ruud leads the list of challengers in this one, with the Norwegian another true clay specialist.

Form has been hard to come by for Ruud in recent weeks, with some early exits in Miami and Indian Wells but he too should be relishing the European clay court swing.

Seeded two, he has some draw protection, and he will be looking to develop some confidence in his game and lift the Barcelona Open trophy at 17/2 with ZetBet.

Defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas has some huge ranking points to defend here in Barcelona and he too is a man searching for his best tennis.

Clay remains his specialist subject, and he could sneak under the radar a touch here in Barcelona, making him an interesting proposition at 14/1 with BetMGM.

FIRST’s top tip for the ATP Barcelona Open

The ATP Tour is famously unforgiving, but Carlos Alcaraz remains a winning machine, and he should take no prisoners here, on his way to a third Barcelona Open title.

Extra tips

Young French star Arthur Fils has been picking up some superb results of late and his game looks well suited to all surfaces.

He has a decent draw this week and with confidence high in his camp, he could spring a surprise or two here in Barcelona.

Winning this event feels a tall order but he could succeed in his quarter, and he looks a good price at 3/1 to reach the semi-finals with Vegasland.

Home favourites have historically enjoyed some good runs here in Barcelona and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will be hoping for one of those this week.

The Spaniard reached the semi-finals in Monte Carlo last week, being edged out by Alcaraz in the last four. But he could go deep again here in Barcelona, and he is worth a look at 16/1 with BetMGM.

ATP BMW Open betting preview: Mensik’s dream run to continue?

It has been an incredible start to 2025 for Jakub Mensik, who capped it by clinching the Miami Open title – stopping Novak Djokovic from clinching his 100th ATP title in the process.

A well-earned rest has been on the agenda for the Czech 20-year-old, but he will be under increased scrutiny here in Munich, at the BMW Open.

Another staple of the European clay court swing, this event in Bavaria has been in operation for over 125 years and the list of previous winners is impressive.

Roger Federer and Andy Murray are just two of the tennis playing behemoths who have tasted success here in Munich, with two-time champion Alexander Zverev leading the charge again here in 2025.

The favourites

As mentioned, home favourite Alexander Zverev is always well backed here in Munich, and he will be looking to taste success in this event once more.

2017 and 2018 were the previous years in which Zverev lifted the trophy here at the BMW Open and he will be desperate to etch his name on the cup once more, with the French Open looming large next month.

As top seed, he should be in a position to ease into this tournament as he goes, with clay always a surface that he can find results on.

There is no doubt that Alexander Zverev is the man to beat here in Munich, and he is 5/2 to lift the trophy with Mr.Play.

American Ben Shelton has been steadily climbing the rankings this season and he looks set to go well here in Munich.

Clay wouldn’t be the first surface many attribute with his all-action game, but he is dangerous in any game he plays, such is the power on his serve and forehand.

Protected by his seeding, he may too be able to get into the groove here in Munich and he is worth a look to triumph here in Munich at 17/2 with ZetBet.

FIRST’s top tip for the ATP BMW Munich Open

Over the past couple of years, Alexander Zverev has become far more consistent in his type of event, and he will be tough to stop at the top of the draw here.

Extra Tips

The return to action of Jakub Mensik is sure to be capturing the imagination in Munich and while he is an unknown quantity on clay, he will be looking to cause a stir from 8th seed.

He looks to have a manageable draw, especially if his fitness problems are behind him and he looks super value to win his quarter at 11/2 with Vegasland, while he could be worth a look to go all the way at 12/1 with BetMGM.

For some players, this is their first clay court event of the season, while for others they have been spending plenty of time on the dirt.

The likes of Francisco Cerundolo and Jiri Lehecka have done plenty of miles on the clay in recent weeks and they could be worth following for the title here at 14/1 and 16/1 respectively with BetMGM.
