IMAGO Andrey Rublev celebrates winning the 2024 Madrid Open

With attention beginning to turn to the second Grand Slam of 2025 at the French Open, both the ATP and WTA Tours converge on Madrid after action in Barcelona and Munich, with every player looking to have their clay court game in order.

The absence of Jannik Sinner continues to be a decisive subject in the men’s game but with the Italian out of action here, there are plenty of chances for other players to get into the groove ahead of Paris next month.

Both Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka have been the dominant forces both in this event in recent years and on the WTA Tour of late and they will lead the charge in the Spanish capital this year once again.

As 1000 events on both the ATP and WTA Tour, there is heaps at stake here and it should be a super week on the dirt.

Suzan Lamens

While the majority of British tennis hopes currently sit with the likes of Jack Draper and Katie Boulter, Emma Raducanu’s enigmatic brand of tennis continues to make her one of the most feared players on the WTA Tour.

Coaching uncertainty continues to plague Raducanu and her camp, but she has been showing signs of finding form sporadically in 2025.

However, clay has never been a surface where she has showcased her best tennis and in Suzan Lamens, she looks to have a very tough opening round draw on her hands here.

The Dutch number one is operating from a career high in the WTA Rankings, reached the last 4 in Rouen last week and should be better prepared on the clay than Raducanu here.

Quarter four (Women’s)

There is quality packed in the field here in Madrid and the bottom quadrant of the draw (quarter four) looks to be the most dangerous.

Defending champion and world number 2 Iga Swiatek is the obvious candidate, with the Pole looking to get herself into gear ahead of her French Open defence next month.

Elsewhere, Australian Open champion Madison Keys is in the mix, as is Jelena Ostapenko – who romped to the title in Stuttgart last week, beating the aforementioned Swiatek and Sabalenka along the way.

Titans of the game such as Naomi Osaka and Petra Kvitova are always dangerous and are also housed in quarter 4, while the dangerous Emma Navarro could also have a deep run here in Madrid.

Carlos Alcaraz

Two-time Madrid Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has been ticking along very nicely this season and he too has a French Open title to protect in Paris next month.

Holgur Rune had too much for him in the final at Barcelona last week but he dominated the rest of the draw and won comfortably in Monte Carlo the week before.

Having the likes of Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev in the draw will of course add more jeopardy than he has faced in recent weeks, but he is seeded 2, has plenty of draw protection and will be backed to the hilt by the home fans here in Madrid.
