One punter won an impressive £25,548 off just a £23 stake via William Hill after seeing two £11.86 treble bets land.
The events were spread over a couple of weeks, starting with the Lincoln Handicap at the end of March and culminating in Rory McIlroy’s victory at the Augusta Masters at the weekend: a result that cost bookies millions of pounds.

McIlroy’s final day performance will undoubtedly have given the bettor some nervous moments, as he missed a five-foot putt to take the Green Jersey outright, before steadying his nerves and winning a shoot-out against Brit Justin Rose.
The William Hill customer placed two bets – an £11.86 win treble on McIlroy to win The Masters, Nick Rockett to win the Grand National and Godwinson to win the Lincoln Handicap.
They also placed a second bet, this time another treble. The second bet also included McIlroy and Godwinson, but the bettor swapped out Nick Rockett in the Grand National, replacing them with Iroko. Iroko duly obliged, placing fourth in the National.
Both bets started with the Lincoln Handicap, which was the flagship race on the opening day of this year’s flat season. With the finish line in sight, Oliver Show and Orandi looked to be battling it out for first place, but jockey Cieren Fallon timed his run perfectly and rode Godwinson to victory by a head.
Although Godwinson started the race at odds of 17/2, the punter took early prices of 14/1, boosting his winnings significantly.
Next up was the Grand National with the William Hill winner keeping their eye on two horses. Nick Rockett landed the victory with a starting price of 33/1, although the punter had taken 20/1 odds.
Iroko ran home in fourth position. Although the punter took a price of 9/1, Iroko started the race as the 13/2 favourite.
Finally, the multiple bet headed to Augusta for The Masters. Despite having won pretty much every major golf tournament and accolade going, The Masters had eluded McIlroy.
Many pundits believed his time to win the Green Jersey had passed. Despite those claims, the Northern Irishman headed into the final day of play two strokes ahead.
He double-bogeyed the first hole, throwing away the lead, but had pulled four clear again with six holes remaining.
A poor run, ending with a bogey on the final hole, meant McIlroy had to face off against Justin Rose in a replay of the 18th hole. McIlroy made an exceptional approach shot and sunk the putt for a birdie and victory.
William Hill has said that it lost more than £1m on that result alone, across all bettors.
Spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “Whilst single bets on Rory McIlroy to win the Masters have cost us well into seven figures, we’ve been stung by another bet featuring the superstar Northern Irishman.”
While this lucky punter’s win may not have been in the millions, it still represented an impressive £25,548.74 return from a total stake of £23.72.
Phelps said of the achievement: “A very shrewd punter pulled off a bettor’s dream with McIlroy finally doing the business at Augusta, Nick Rockett landing the Grand National and Godwinson holding on in the dying strides to win the William Hill Lincoln.
“And that’s not all. The customer also placed a successful each-way place treble featuring McIlroy, Godwinson, and in this bet, Iroko, all to place in their respective competitions. In total, the bettor has pulled off a pair of famous spring trebles and taken us for over £25,000.”
Phelps finished by saying: “We simply have to take our hats off to the punter here – there’s nothing quite like backing the winner in three major spring sporting events.”
