Middlesbrough next manager odds: Odds on Steven Gerrard to replace Michael Carrick slashed
Former England and Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has seen his odds of taking over the Middlesbrough managerial role slashed to 6/4 from 20/1 a few days ago, overtaking early favourites Rob Edwards and Steve Cooper.
Despite a glittering playing career, Gerrard’s managerial career has been mixed, at best. His first position saw him take charge of Liverpool Academy’s under-18 team.

In 2018, he started his senior managerial run when he was installed as manager of Rangers, and he enjoyed success at the helm of the Gers. During his third full season in charge, he took them to their first league title in a decade, having gone the whole season unbeaten.
In November 2021, Gerrard’s successful stint at Rangers saw him land the leading role at Aston Villa, where he succeeded Dean Smith. Villa paid Rangers a £4million fee to settle his contract and installed Gerrard within four days of Smith’s departure.
His Villa career started positively, with the Villans beating Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0, at home, in his first match. The rest of the season’s results were mixed, however, and the club finished 14th, representing a three-position slide compared to the season before.
The next season started poorly with Gerrard’s Villa only picking up two wins from their opening 12 games and the club dismissed the former England captain in October 2022.
After several months out of the game, Gerrard was announced as manager of the Saudi Pro League team Al-Ettifaq. A few months later, he signed a two-year extension but left by mutual consent in January 2025.
Since leaving the Saudi club, Gerrard has been without a position, although his name is regularly linked with managerial vacancies.
In May, it looked likely that Gerrard would make a return to Ibrox, where he enjoyed the best years of his managerial career so far. He was one of the front runners for the position and had been described by former Ibrox chairman, Dave King, as the “obvious choice” for the role.
King went on to say: “I know him well enough to fairly accurately state it would be unfinished business for him. Steven left at a time he didn’t want to leave. That’s a fact. He wanted to defend that title. I think he would have defended the title had he stayed.”
However, just hours after King’s statement, Gerrard pulled out of the race. At the time, it was reported that he and his family had decided to stay in the Middle East for at least another year. Rangers eventually opted for Russell Martin.
Middlesbrough have been without a manager for the past week, since sacking Michael Carrick, who had been at the club for two and a half years, seemingly paying the price for missing out on a top-six position during the last two campaigns.
Gerrard, who was priced at 20/1 just a couple of days ago, would likely be tasked with guiding the club to the playoffs if he took over the role.
