Middlesbrough next manager odds: Who will succeed Michael Carrick at the Riverside?

Following a tenth-place finish in last season’s English Championship, Middlesbrough are on the lookout for a new manager after parting company with Michael Carrick.

The 43-year-old leaves the Riverside Stadium after over two-and-a-half years in charge.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United midfielder remarkably took Boro to the Championship playoffs after coming in halfway through the campaign, following a stuttering start to the 2022/23 season.

After guiding the club to an eighth-place finish and the EFL Cup semi-finals in 2023/24, Carrick was rewarded with a new three-year contract in June last year.

But, given Middlesbrough have regressed to 10th place in 2024/25, the Boro board have felt that change is necessary.

So who will succeed Michael Carrick as the new Middlesbrough manager?

Steve Cooper (2/1) was most recently the manager of Leicester City in the Premier League, after Enzo Maresca left the Foxes for Chelsea last summer. However, his initial three-year contract turned into a short stay at the King Power Stadium.

But in his previous job at Nottingham Forest, he led the Tricky Trees to Championship playoff success and this could appeal to the Middlesbrough hierarchy.

The Welshman also lost out to Brentford in the playoffs with Swansea, so he can certainly take a team to Wembley and fight for promotion.

Rob Edwards (3/1) took his last job around the same time as Carrick took the reins at the Riverside. After success with Forest Green Rovers in League Two, he left Watford for the Hornets’ rivals Luton Town in November 2022.

The Welshman guided the Hatters to the Premier League against Coventry City, who got the better of Boro, in the playoffs that season. After nearly three years at Kenilworth Road, the 42-year-old left Luton by mutual agreement in January.

Danny Rohl (6/1) has coached at the likes of RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and even been the assistant of the German national football team. The 36-year-old guided Sheffield Wednesday away from relegation fears in his first managerial job.

However, the German may be tempted to move to a divisional rival given the shambles in Sheffield surrounding the Hillsborough hierarchy and the late payment of wages.

The Owls’ cashflow problem may see their young boss leave Yorkshire sooner rather than later.

Brian Priske (6/1) is an interesting overseas candidate, having enjoyed a successful spell with Midtjylland in his native Denmark. Having managed Royal Antwerp in Belgium, the 48-year-old enjoyed domestic success with Czech capital club Sparta Prague.

He succeeded Liverpool manager Arne Slot as Feyenoord boss last summer, but an initial three-year contract came to an end in February. Having been linked with the managerial vacancy at Rangers previously, he may opt for Middlesbrough and English football instead.

Sean Dyche (8/1) was most recently with Everton, but has a track record of taking Burnley from the Championship having done so twice.

Tom Cleverley (14/1) has only had a short sample size as a manager, after being given the Watford job on a permanent basis after losing just one of his seven games in interim charge. The 35-year-old may be a good manager one day, but this potential appointment carries an element of risk.

Gary O’Neil (16/1) previously played over 100 games for Boro so the club link is appealing, and he might have an outside chance of managing Middlesbrough but, having only tasted Premier League management, it’s unknown whether he’d be willing to dip into the Championship.

Like the former Wolves and Bournemouth boss, Steven Gerrard (20/1) is an unattached English manager that has managed in the Premier League but may be tempted by the job. However, he is the same price as Stockport County’s Dave Challinor (20/1).
