Oleksandr Usyk: The British giant-slayer

Oleksandr Usyk is a giant-slayer who specializes in British boxers – Tony Bellew, Derek Chisora, Anthony Joshua, Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury have all been felled by “the little middleweight”, as Fury used to call him.

The incredible Ukrainian is going to go down in boxing history as an all-time great after an illustrious amateur career that saw him win 335 from 350 bouts, crowned European, World and Olympic champion.

As a professional, he replicated his success by becoming the first undisputed cruiserweight and heavyweight champion in a four-belt era. He is still one of only three male boxers to be crowned undisputed in two weight classes in a four-belt era, alongside Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue.

All of these accolades are impressive, but you would need to actually watch his fights to be truly blown away by him.

To watch a 6ft3in fighter turn a 6ft9in giant’s legs to jelly with a single punch is truly something.

At cruiserweight, the Ukrainian cleared up the division completely by beating Krzysztof Glowacki, Michael Hunter, Marco Huck, Mairis Briedis and Murat Gassiev.

There was no one left to fight, so he boldly moved up to heavyweight despite criticisms that he would be too small.

He proved them wrong by clearing up yet again, sweeping aside AJ, Fury and Dubois to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis. That’s some statement.

Daniel Dubois: Momentum is on his side, but history isn’t

Daniel Dubois rose to fame before he had even stepped into a professional boxing ring for being the teenager that dropped Anthony Joshua in sparring.

The Londoner backed up the hype around him by knocking out all but one of his first 15 foes, collecting around a dozen titles to validate his moniker, “Every belt”.

Then, his meteoric rise came to a sudden halt in November 2020 when he fought British rival Joe Joyce behind closed doors in the Royal Albert Hall, London.

Despite the action being fairly even, it was “The Juggernaut’s” persistent jab that pierced Dubois’ armour, eventually bringing down the ‘Greenwich goliath’ in the 10th round. Down on one knee, Dubois opted not to continue after suffering from a shattered eye socket.

Undeterred, “Triple D” bounced back with four knockout wins, in rounds 1,2,3 and 4.

In those comeback fights, he picked up the WBA Interim and WBA Regular titles to land a shot at the unified WBA Super, IBF, WBO, IBO, Ring Magazine holder, Oleksandr Usyk.

But history repeated itself – he was peppered persistently and stopped by a jab, forced to quit on one knee again.

Then, once more, he came back from defeat with a vengeance, and put together a string of impressive knockout victories against a 333lbs Jarrell Miller (TKO 10), the IBF #1 contender Filip Hrgovic (TKO 8), and two-time unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (TKO 5).

That remarkable run awarded him the BBBofC Boxer of the Year 2024 and now has many wondering if he could pull off the biggest upset of 2025.

Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois: The key factors

When Usyk and Dubois met before, the result was conclusive, but not without controversy.

In round five, Dubois landed an uppercut to the Ukrainian’s body which instantly sent him crashing to the canvas. It was promptly dismissed as a knockdown, the referee ruling it as a low blow and allowing the breathless champion a full five minutes to recover.

To this day, the ‘low blow debate’ rages on, somewhat incredulously. Usyk went down feeling the low blow, showing no concerns for being counted as a knockdown. The referee instantly concurred it was low and gave him time, then the WBA investigated the footage after the fight and also ruled it as low.

Case well and truly closed, however it does raise question marks over Usyk’s ability to take a body shot. He’s been dropped by body blows in the amateurs, so ‘Team Dubois’ will be targeting the vulnerable area.

However, straight after that illegitimate knockdown, Dubois steamed in to land another shot downstairs and failed to do so, Usyk even ending the round strongly backing the Briton up on the ropes.

From there, Usyk stepped on the gas, aggressively hunting Dubois until he forced him down under a volley of straight shots in the eighth that Dubois had no answer for. Then he finished matters clinically in the ninth with a single, leaping southpaw right jab.

Last time, ‘Team Dubois’ said all the same things about the need to start fast, back him up and bully him, but it didn’t work, they lost.

Dubois is improved and meets Usyk as his equal as a world champion, but he’s holding the belt that Usyk personally gave up, it’s what adds to the glamour of heavyweight boxing and why it’s the sport’s premium attraction for both bettors and event-going fans alike.

The Brit has the power to hurt Usyk, but if the 374-fight veteran ever found himself in trouble or on the canvas, his experience and elitism would see him come through.

Both boxers have around 26-minutes of first-hand experience of each other but that data is far more dangerous in the hands of Usyk, who is one of the most intelligent fighters on the planet. Brain beats brawn.
