Ted's Treble: Picks for November Meeting Day 2

IMAGO: Saturday is Day 2 of Cheltenham's November Meeting
IMAGO: Saturday is Day 2 of Cheltenham's November Meeting

It's a mega day of action at Cheltenham as the Paddy Power Gold Cup rolls into town. Ed Quigley is on hand with his best three bets of the afternoon.

Cheltenham -  1.45 July Flower

6/5 @ Coral

This doesn't look the deepest of Novice chases to my eye, and I think Henry De Bromhead's mare could be a class apart, and so JULY FLOWER can put herself firmly in the Arkle picture with a win here.

It was fascinating to hear Henry De Bromhead's thoughts after she dotted up on her Chase debut at Limerick; he was keen to stress that perhaps he had misunderstood what her ideal trip should be, as she 'looks more of a two miler than a stayer'.

She has the acid test here, but I think a stiff 2m on soft ground will be perfect for her, and if she jumps like she did on her Chase debut, I think she will be hard to beat.

I'm not shocked that she's single figures to win at the Cheltenham Festival in the aftermath of this encounter.

Cheltenham - 2.20 - Conyers Hill e/w

14/1 @ William Hill

This doesn't look the strongest of renewals, and the market protagonists all have question marks. Jagwar has a big weight to contend with first time up for the season, and the ground may well be going against Il Ridoto.

Taking the view that this is wide-open, at a double-figure price I think Paul Nolan has a cracking chance of grabbing Paddy Power Gold glory with the unexposed CONYERS HILL.

Perhaps he hasn't been the type to find as much off the bridle as one would hope earlier in his career, but he stayed on up the hill in the Grand Annual, and he had the perfect prep run for this when a running-on second when upped to 2m3f at Limerick last month.

He goes into unknown territory stamina-wise in many respects, but I can see him travelling into contention coming down the hill and looks a big each-way player.

Cheltenham - 2.55 Gowel Road e/w

8/1 @ Betfred

Naturally, looking for an up-and-comer seems the logical route to go down, but this could be a real war of attrition, and a good scrap will suit GOWEL ROAD.

He has been a little bit overlooked in this market for a horse as tough as old boots, and has plenty of excellent form at Cheltenham to shout about. He is a former winner of the Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle, enjoys soft ground and should come on a bundle for his seasonal reappearance at this track, where he ran well for a long way before getting tired late on.

He is entitled to strip fitter for that - and his CV suggests he often does improve for a run. He takes on some old foes here, but with that run under his belt and eased to a mark of 146, I wouldn't be shocked if he hit the frame at least.
