Next France manager odds: Who replaces Didier Deschamps?

France made hard work of their second World Cup qualification win on Tuesday night. Les Bleus came from behind to beat Iceland on home turf to maintain their 100% start to qualifying.

With Ukraine and Azerbaijan joining the above pair in Group D, France not making the 2026 World Cup would be a huge shock.

Didier Deschamps has a raft of quality in every position for this France side and he’ll hope to maximise the talent at his disposal next summer, his last tournament in charge, as he prepares to step down from his role after the 2026 World Cup.

While qualification isn’t guaranteed, they are fully expected to jet off to North America next year.

And they’ll likely make the trip stateside as the favourites to go all the way once more, replicating their 2018 triumph in Russia in the process.

Granted, they can ill-afford to get complacent in their bid to book a spot at the World Cup but having overcome arguably their toughest test, beating Ukraine away from home, then they should saunter to the US next year.

In addition, the players will hope to send Deschamps off on a high to see out his 14-year stint in the Les Bleus hotseat. They’ll have to take on the likes of Brazil and Argentina to secure the World Cup, along with European heavyweights Spain, Germany and England.

But with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele and Hugo Ekitike to call upon; it’s no wonder that France are confident of hoisting football’s famous trophy next July.

That being said, it’s Euro 2024 winners Spain who are the 9/2 favourites with bet365 to follow up success in Germany last summer with another piece of silverware.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise given the raft of quality at Luis de la Fuente’s disposal.

France, meanwhile, are the second favourites to win football's famous trophy for the third time, and are at a best price of 13/2 with Ladbrokes to ensure Deschamps bows out with a third World Cup winners’ medal around his neck.

Attention, though, will quickly turn to Deschamps’ replacement. The rumour mill is already in overdrive as to who the French Football Federation will turn to when the 56-year-old steps down from his role in charge of Les Bleus, and there is one name on everyone’s lips.

Zinedine Zidane has been out of managerial work since his second stint as Real Madrid boss in 2021, where he won the Champions League with Los Blancos three years on the bounce between 2015 and 2018.

Want more? Where will Jose Mourinho end up next? Odds and analysis

The French legend is still favourite to take the hot seat, despite previous offers to return to football management, and those this week heavily linking the World Cup winner with Turkish club Fenerbahce, with reports claiming he had reached ‘a preliminary agreement’ with the Super Lig side.

Other names in the hat include former England manager Gareth Southgate, who guided the Three Lions to two European Championship finals. Plus, Jose Mourinho who was under consideration for the Nottingham Forest job - before Ange Postecoglou took the post earlier this month.

Former French women’s manager Herve Renard is chalked up at 14’s. While ex-French national team captain Patrick Vieira, now in charge at Italian club Genoa is at 25/1 with former France manager Laurent Blanc alongside Thiago Motta also at 25s.
