Next Wolves manager odds: The favourites to succeed Pereira after O’Neil rejection

Next Wolves manager odds | Ten Hag Leads Race After O’Neil Rejection

The Wolves managerial pursuit rumbles on. Vitor Pereira was relieved of his duties on Sunday and many believed Gary O’Neil was expected to complete a dramatic return to Molineux this week.

However, O’Neil ruled himself out of the running for the role on Monday night, which has Wolves back to square one.

In a volatile managerial market, where you never know when the next Premier League manager will be let go, we run through the updated favourites to succeed Pereira in the Midlands.

Erik ten Hag

Out of work following a whirlwind stint as Bayer Leverkusen boss, Erik ten Hag has emerged as the 5/2 favourite with Coral to be next Wolves head coach. The Dutchman will be itching to get back in the game and prove his doubters wrong having lasted just three months at the BayArena.

The issue will be whether this Wolves side can transition from a three-man backline to Ten Hag’s 4-2-3-1 setup.

Maybe this change in system is what Wolves need to drag themselves out of the mire as the former Manchester United manager, who did win the 2024 FA Cup, considers a return to English football.

Rob Edwards

Having been at 8/1 with Ladbrokes to take over as Wolves boss on Monday, Rob Edwards has since shortened into 3/1 with Betfred to take over at Molineux. Edwards’ Middlesbrough side have made a fine start to the season and sit second in the Championship, with promotion well and truly on their minds.

Also a rumoured target for Southampton, who sacked Will Still on Sunday night, Wolves would need to move on swiftly from O’Neil if they are to target Edwards. His

Luton side showed glimpses of their quality during their solitary season in the Premier League, though Boro would be reluctant to lose the 42-year-old after such a promising opening few months to the campaign.

Robbie Keane

Another whose price has shortened since O’Neil ruled himself out of the running, Robbie Keane was at 16/1 to take over as Wolves boss on Monday. The Irishman has since shortened to 6/1 with Ladbrokes to return to Molineux.

The 45-year-old came through the ranks at Wolves before leaving for Coventry in 1999, and his career would come full circle where he made the move back to the Midlands.

Currently head coach of Hungarian side Ferencvaros, a role he’s held since January, their inconsistency under Keane may soften their stance on the former striker.

Rui Borges

Rui Borges remains in the conversation to take over as Wolves boss despite previously suggesting he wants to remain in Lisbon.

Borges took over as Sporting boss on Boxing Day and successfully guided the capital side to the Liga Portugal title.

The 44-year-old was at 6/1 with BetVictor to take over as Wolves boss on Monday, but has since drifted to 12/1 with Betfred.

While a move is unlikely, O’Neil’s bombshell decision on Monday means nothing can be ruled out until the new man has signed on the dotted line at Molineux.

Brendan Rodgers

Ahead of the decision to part ways with Pereira, Brendan Rodgers was the 2/1 favourite to be next Wolves boss.

The Northern Irishman left his role as Celtic boss last week after a disappointing defeat to league leaders Hearts. Subsequent wins over Falkirk and Rangers suggests it was the right move.

However, a return to Premier League management seems unlikely for Rodgers at this stage.

Indeed, having been 8/1 to succeed Pereira on Monday, Rodgers has since drifted to 14/1 with bet365 to be next Wolves boss.
