Chelsea’s new £55m signing, Joao Pedro, repaid a decent chunk of his £55m signing fee as he scored the only two goals in the Blues’ victory over Brazilian club Fluminense.

The victory sees the London club progress to the final, which will be played on Sunday and will see Chelsea face either Champions League winners PSG or the Club World Cup’s most decorated team, Real Madrid.

A week ago, 23-year-old Pedro was still a Brighton player and had been on holiday in his home country of Brazil: the country where he grew up supporting and playing for Fluminense.

After signing, his new club took advantage of a special mid-tournament window to register the striker for the rest of the tournament. Thanks to Chelsea’s other new striker, Liam Delap, being suspended for the semifinal, Pedro earned his first start for the Blues, against his boyhood club, Fluminense.

Although most fans and analysts expected the game to be a tight, tricky affair, with Fluminense soaking up pressure and letting Chelsea have the majority of possession, Pedro had other ideas.

After 18 minutes, he scored a screamer against his former club. While he initially wheeled away to celebrate, Pedro remembered himself and, instead, held his hands up to the Fluminense crowd. He repeated the apologetic gesture after scoring his and Chelsea’s second in the 56th minute.

Pedro said, after the match: “When I was young, I didn’t have nothing. [They] gave everything to me. They showed me to the world. If I’m here, it’s because they believe in me. So, I’m very grateful. But this is football. I have to be professional. I feel sorry for them, but I have to do my job.”

Chelsea now progress to Sunday’s final, where they will meet the winner of tonight’s semifinal between PSG and Real Madrid. PSG are favourites for that match, with odds of 7/10 to qualify for the final. Real have been given odds of evens to progress, and it wouldn’t be too surprising to see the five-time Club World Cup winners do the business.

Chelsea’s result has also seen their odds to lift the trophy, and take home the substantial prize money, lifted. Before the tournament started, Chelsea were 10/1 to win. Real Madrid were 9/2 joint favourites, with PSG just behind them in the betting at 6/1.

Before their semifinal, Chelsea were priced behind PSG and Real Madrid, with odds of 11/4 to lift the trophy.

However, having sidestepped the last remaining non-European side in the competition and having shown off Pedro’s goalscoring talent, they are now deemed the second favourite. PSG are the favourites to win, at 6/4, with Chelsea priced at 7/4 and Real Madrid at 9/4.
