Liverpool state of play

Table-topping Liverpool head into the weekend knowing a point will be enough to see them clinch a second Premier League title in five years.

The Reds currently sit 12 points ahead of Arsenal in second and are on the cusp of rounding off a near-perfect debut campaign for manager Arne Slot.

Recent contract extensions of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have continued the feel-good atmosphere at Anfield, where Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 14 league matches. Each of their last six on home turf have also ended in victory.

Tottenham state of play

To say Tottenham’s Premier League campaign hasn’t gone to plan this season would be an understatement.

Ange Postecoglou’s men find themselves languishing in 16th position ahead of the weekend, having won just one of their previous seven league matches.

The paltry run leaves the Australian on the verge of an exit, with reports suggesting Postecoglou is set to depart at the end of the season.

Such narratives are hardly great preparation for a visit to Anfield, where Spurs have failed to record a single victory in their last 15 visits in all competitions.

Key talking point: Liverpool could feast on Spurs’ leaky backline

Liverpool have looked a more measured side under Slot’s tutelage compared to the ‘heavy metal football’ witnessed under his predecessor Jurgen Klopp.

And yet, the Merseysiders still stand as the Premier League’s highest-scoring side with 75 goals in 33 matches. That’s nine more than Manchester City, who currently occupy second spot in the scoring charts with 66.

The gap might have been even larger but for poor finishing in the Reds’ 1-0 win at Leicester last weekend, where the visitors recorded a whopping 4.53 xG (expected goals) across the 90 minutes according to Understat.

All of the above makes for ominous reading for a Tottenham defence which has consistently made a habit of picking the ball out of their own net throughout the campaign.

Postecoglou’s men have averaged a worrying 1.55 goals conceded in the league so far, keeping just six clean sheets in the process.

A point may be all Liverpool need to clinch the title, but there may be temptation to back them to do so in style.

FIRST’s top tip for Liverpool vs Tottenham

Liverpool have scored over 2.5 goals in 25% of home fixtures already and, given Spurs’ defensive vulnerabilities, the home side should be backed to do so again here.
