Sweden Women vs England Women tips and predictions: Lionesses to leave those in yellow feeling blue?

Sweden were always fancied to make it out of a group that contained Germany, Denmark and Poland, but they weren’t the favourites to come out as group winners, which is exactly what they achieved on Saturday evening by beating the Germans. 

They didn’t just beat the group favourites, they hammered them, winning by four goals to nil. Sure, they were helped out by Germany defender Carlotta Wamser, who was sent off during the first half, though they were already a goal to the good at that point, so their effort is not to be overlooked.

They were as big as 14/1 to win the whole thing, before a ball was kicked. But now After three wins from three in the group, scoring eight and conceding just one are now into 9/2 with Ladbrokes. Peter Gerhardsson women will surely fancy themselves to make life tough for the English.

After a fairly sluggish start against the French during the first round of group games, the Lionesses have stepped on the accelerator, shifting through the gears to deliver two powerful offensive performances.

Firstly, beating the Netherlands by four goals to nil in matchday two, which was followed by a 6-1 demolition of the Welsh in their final Group D game.

After those two efforts, the holders should be revved up and ready to go against the Swedes. 

The defending champions began the competition as 4/1 second favourites to win the trophy again, and despite an iffy start remain just behind Spain in the outright market. 

Key talking point: Hemp holds the key for England 

Lauren Hemp’s efforts at this tournament have gone a little under the radar, but she’s offered a constant threat, taking on full backs with supreme confidence, before delivering some fine crosses, several of which should’ve been converted.

The Swedes will offer more defensive resistance than the likes of the Netherlands and Wales, which means Hemp’s creativity, especially from wide areas, will be hugely important for the Lionesses. 

Expect to see the likes of Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway looking for Hemp on the left wing as often as possible, and if she gets enough of the ball, she’ll do some damage.

Pick: Lauren Hemp over 0.5 assists - 9/2 (Ladbrokes)

As mentioned above, Hemp has created plenty from her wide starting position, despite not yet registering an assist. 

She ranks as England’s best player at the tournament in terms of expected assisted goals, with only five players (from all nations) creating more in that sense. 

The fact that the Man City player is averaging 0.65 expected assisted goals per 90 minutes at EURO 2025 tells us that she’s laying on some decent opportunities for her fellow attackers, and if she continues to operate in the same way, her first assist won’t be far away.

Not only has Lauren Hemp threatened as a provider, but she’s also shown her ability to get on the end of things, scoring with a header against Wales last time out, while it’s not as if she’s shy to shoot, taking five shots at the tournament so far.

During the 2024/25 WSL campaign, Hemp averaged a chunky 1.86 shots on target per 90 minutes. I like that stat, and let’s face it, it makes odds of 10/11 look too tasty to turn down. 

Team news 

The Swedes delivered a confidence-boosting performance against the Germans last time out and off the back of that, Peter Gerhardsson isn’t likely to tinker too much with the lineup. 

Fridolina Rolfo made her first start of the tournament on matchday three, and having scored, she could retain her place and Arsenal striker Stina Blackstenius' qualities will be known by the whole of the Lionesses group.

For the English, nothing much is expected to change. Both Ella Toone and Lauren Hemp were kept nice and fresh by being withdrawn at half time against the Welsh, while Lauren James also came off quite early with fitness in mind. 

After seemingly finding the winning formula, expect an unchanged XI to be announced by Sarina Wiegman.
