RBC Heritage: Things to consider

The RBC Heritage used to be the calm after the storm, and we witnessed one of the strongest emotional storms in golf as Rory McIlroy became only the sixth man to win golf’s Grand Slam as he donned the ‘green jacket’ on Sunday night.

Late last year, we discussed McIlroy’s best chances of claiming his fifth major in 2025 and winning that elusive Masters title. The Heritage however has now been elevated to a ‘signature event’ and the elite players must gather their breath and travel the short distance down the South Carolina coast to Harbour Town and Hilton Head Island.

Players can’t rest on their laurels with $20m (£15.25m) in the kitty (with 20% going to the winner) and 700 FedEx Cup points for whoever shows off the plaid jacket come Sunday night. The RBC Heritage at Harbour Town is a non-cut ‘signature event’.

Qualifiers include last year’s top 50 from the FedEx Cup, this season’s tournament winners, the Aon Swing 5 which is currently the top five players from the accumulated FedEx Cup points list via Puerto Rico, Valspar, the Texas Children’s Open and Valero Texas Open.

The Aon Next 10 will also qualify, led by Justin Rose (66/1 BetMGM) who missed out to McIlroy in the 2025 Masters playoff.

There are also spots from the OWGR top 30 for players not otherwise exempt and a few invites on the table.

RBC Heritage: Top of the betting odds

Leading the market is Scottie Scheffler at 10/3 with Ladbrokes, and he is still world number one for now.

After passing the ‘green jacket’ to McIlroy last week, will he be doing similar with a plaid one at Harbour Town golf links? Or will the defending champ be adding another to his own wardrobe?

Scheffler won the RBC Heritage at a canter in 2024 on a score of 19-under par. The American won by three strokes over Sahith Theegala (66/1 Betway), and four strokes over Wyndham Clark (50/1 Spreadex) and Patrick Cantlay (16/1 Coral) who are having quiet seasons so far in 2025.

Ludvig Aberg (12/1 BetMGM) was my big tip for the Masters and he was tied for the lead with about 2 holes to play before finishing bogey-triple! That’s golf but he is back and second favourite alongside Collin Morikawa (11/1 Betway) in the RBC Heritage market.

Xander Schauffele seems to be finally finding some form after a long injury layoff, finishing t8 at Augusta, and he is fourth in the RBC Heritage betting odds at 14/1 with Spreadex. Xander has a strong course fit rating for Harbour Town Golf Links and was fourth here in 2023.

Justin Thomas is another with good form at the RBC Heritage owning progressive 35-25-5 finishes there the last three years.

He also has another top 10 to his name on Hilton Head Island. Thomas recently lost out to Victor Hovland at the Valspar Championship by just one stroke. He also finished second at the AMEX earlier this season.

The American ranks 8th in approach and 33rd in ‘strokes gained around the green’. He leads the tour in pitching from inside 100 yards.

Jordan Spieth looks a little overpriced to me this week off the back of a top 15 finish at the Masters which followed a t12 at the Valero Texas Open.

The former RBC Heritage winner has great course history here and backed up his 2022 win with a runner-up finish in 2023. Spieth is a wizard in the shot making department and his course management has come on leaps and bounds.

Jason Day is a very interesting prospect this week at the RBC Heritage. The Australian is a scrambling machine ranking 32nd in 2024 and he is ranked number one in approaches from 125-150 yards.

Day sits 14th in bogey avoidance which is also a key stat at Harbour Town. Day carded just five bogeys at the Masters en-route to a t8 finish.

In fact, he was the last player in the field to be bogey-free, making his first error on his 36th hole. It’s a mixed bag for Day at Harbour Town with a handful of finishes around the 20th spot.

FIRST’s top tip for the RBC Heritage

Justin Thomas has been second twice this season and looks primed to go one better at the RBC Heritage. Back him at 18/1 (five places) each way with Spreadex.

Extra tips

Jordan Spieth is a former winner at Hilton Head Island, and looks underrated by the market. He is on offer at 28/1 (eight places) with Coral and Ladbrokes.

Jason Day is one of the form players on tour this season and doesn’t make many mistakes. Back the Aussie at 40/1 (six places) with BetMGM.

RBC Heritage: Value Bets

Down towards the bottom end of the RBC Heritage market, Ryan Gerard (125/1 BetMGM) tops the Aon Swing 5 list while Sami Valimaki (175/1 Ladbrokes/Coral) just sneaks in. So does Ryo Hisatsune whose chances I like this week.

Firstly, talking about some course premiums at Harbour Town, the course fit profile is one of accuracy and positioning from the tee and a great wedge and short game, which leads me to my first perceived outsider.

Robert MacIntyre is one of the finest shapers of the ball (both ways) in world golf. This is why I love him for Harbour Town Golf Links with all the doglegs on the short Pete Dye Track playing just 7,213 yards to a par of 71.

The world number 20 missed the cut at Augusta but had back-to-back ninth place finishes previously to add to a t11 at Bay Hill and a t6 in Phoenix.

MacIntyre is 22nd in driving accuracy and fifth in ‘strokes gained tee to green’. He is also third in ‘approaches from 150-175 yards’ which is a key metric around Harbour Town.

Brian Harman is a regular on the shortlist for me at the RBC Heritage, especially at inflated odds. A t36 at the beastly Augusta wasn’t exactly unexpected for one of the shortest players on tour after winning the Valero Texas Open.

Harman has a newfound confidence, now being a major champion, and he has an affinity with Dye courses. He has finished in the top 15 in three of his last four outings at Harbour Town.

Ryo Hisatsune has had a slow start to the PGA Tour since earning his card via the DP World Tour.

The former Open de France winner showed his skillset when winning at Le Golf National and it matches up nicely with the RBC Heritage test.

It will be Hisatsune’s first visit to Harbour Town but ranking 21st in total driving efficiency and 9 out of 10 in my model for driving accuracy, he should enjoy the test.

In three of his last six events Hisatsune has finished t10 in Mexico and has recorded standout t4 and t5 finishes at the Valspar Championship and Valero Texas Open respectively.

FIRST’s top value tips for the RBC Heritage

Robert MacIntyre has all the skills required to do well at Harbour Town. Back the Scot at 50/1 (six places) each way with BetMGM.

Brian Harman has a great record at Pete Dye tracks. Back the plotter at 66/1 (six places) each way with BetMGM.

Ryo Hisatsune is starting to find his feet on the PGA Tour. Back him on a course that suits at 175/1 each way (six places) with Betway.
