Ted's Treble: Coral Gold Cup weekend Day One
The ITV cameras are in town, as the Coral Gold Cup meeting heads to Newbury. Ed Quigley who has had 12/1 and 7/1 winners this week serves up his best trio of bets for the action...
Newbury - 12.45 Mambonumberfive
5/1 @ Coral
MAMBONUMBERFIVE can hopefully get punters dancing in this Limited Handicap Chase for the Novices over 2m. Trainer Ben Pauling warned punters that his charge is a big baby and would probably strip a lot fitter for his seasonal reappearance and Chase debut at Aintree earlier this month, but he defied fitness concerns to win well on the comeback trail.
What was noticeable is how well the four-year-old jumped the first time of asking over the larger obstacles - he looked a natural, and didn't look like an individual who would take a lot of match practice at his fences.
With more improvement likely, a 5lb hike in the weights shouldn't be too much of an issue for a horse who has any amount of potential. He could easily make up into a graded performer over fences, so a mark of 133 probably still underestimates him. With the yard in fine fettle, a big run is expected with the excellent Ben Jones in the saddle.

Newbury - 1.50 Wendigo
7/4 @ William Hill
This is a class encounter with some very promising Novice Chasers locking horns. The likes of Bobs Worth, Coneygree and Clan Des Obeaux have won this race in recent years, so it is often a race that throws up a top-class operator, and I think this year's renewal can go the way of the Jamie Snowden-trained WENDIGO.
Smart as a Novice Hurdler, he was unlucky when finishing only fifth in the Albert Bartlett at the Cheltenham Festival, where he nearly came down two flights from home. He made a nice introduction to fences when beaten on the line at Worcester in a hot race.
The winner has gone on to subsequently win at Cheltenham, and two other horses who were in the race have since bolted up. Wendigo should be fitter for that run, and I was impressed with how well he jumped - especially when he was asked for a couple of big leaps.
The Jamie Snowden team continue to fire in the winners, and this six-year-old looks to have major claims.

Newbury - 3.35 Diamond Ri
5/1 @ Ladbrokes
DIAMOND RI hasn't been seen since finishing runner-up at Cheltenham in April 2024, so this is potentially a big ask on the back of a 590-day layoff. However, with the Joe Tizzard team in outrageously good form at the moment, it would be no surprise if he were to run a massive race on his comeback.
He stayed on right up the Cheltenham hill over 2m4f when last seen, and like many of Tizzard's horses, shaped like an individual who would really benefit from a step up to 3m.
He may well need this outing, but a mark of 128 could massively underestimate his chances and he comes into this thoroughly unexposed. Brendan Powell takes the ride and this combination look to have major claims.
