The men’s singles French Open champion will be crowned on Sunday, 8 June, at Paris’ Roland Garros, one of the most iconic arenas in sport.

All the action gets underway on Monday, 25 May, but some players will have bigger dreams than others as to what they can achieve.

Carlos Alcaraz will look to defend the title he won impressively 12 months ago, when he came through five-set thrillers against Jannik Sinner in the semi-final and Alexander Zverev in the final.

Sinner, the world number one and top seed for Roland Garros, will be seeking revenge and a first French Open title of his own.

You can read the full breakdown of the WTA French Open tips and predictions - but if not, stick around here as we delve into the runners and riders in the men’s side of the tournament.

The favourites

We have detailed our early value tips at Roland Garros, but the bookmakers are in little doubt: either one of Alcaraz or Sinner will win the French Open in 2025.

Indeed, if you convert their odds into win probabilities, the pair cover around 80% of the entire betting market.

You can easily see why the bookies would come to that conclusion. Still only 22, Alcaraz already has four grand slam titles to his name – including two won in 2024.

While a silver medal in the Olympic Games last summer adds an extra layer to the Spaniard’s love of Roland Garros, where the tournament was held, and clay courts in general.

Five prominent clay court events have been played so far in 2025, with Alcaraz entering three of them, he won the Monte Carlo Masters and Italian Open (beating Sinner in straight sets), and reached the final of the Barcelona Open.

As for Sinner, here’s a guy that has won three of the five grand slam events since the start of 2024 – establishing him as the best all-surface player in the sport.

The Italian, who lost three months of his 2025 campaign to a doping ban, returned to action at the Italian Open, where he battled through to the final. But he found Alcaraz too good on the day.

Sinner has never gone beyond the semi-final of the French Open and doesn’t have a strong record on clay, in comparison to his results on hard courts at least.

The contenders

There’s a big drop-off in the betting market to the next favourites, with Zverev and Novak Djokovic considered to be the next most likely champions.

Zverev is in danger of becoming tennis’ nearly man, having lost in the final of three grand slam majors and being defeated in six other semi-finals.

His record in the French Open in recent years – SF-SF-SF-F – is stellar, but the German still needs to find an extra gear to get over the line in these big tournaments.

As for Djokovic, well, answers on a postcard. He’s won 24 grand slam titles, but only three of them have come on clay. Still, he managed to win the Olympic gold medal at Roland Garros last summer.

The 37-year-old’s form is a major concern, however. He’s split from coach Andy Murray after suffering a series of shock defeats, which includes early exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid.

As tennis’ new generation takes over, Djokovic is struggling to keep up on clay.

FIRST’s top tip for men’s French Open

Alcaraz has the converging trends of current and event form, which are enhanced by his wins over Sinner in big matches on clay. He’s the best bet in the field.

Extra tips

Most bookmakers will pay out on each way bets if your pick makes the final, so Casper Ruud at 20/1 with Ladbrokes could be of interest. The Dane has reached two finals and a semi-final at the French Open in the last three years. He won the Madrid Open a couple of weeks ago too.

The value picks

Betting on grand slams vs non-grand slams can present its challenges, so the value plays could be vital. Quite whether clay turns out to be Jack Draper’s favourite surface in years to come remains to be seen, but the young Englishman has made strides on the dirt in 2025.

In his last two tournaments, Draper has reached the final of the Madrid Open – beating classy operators like Matteo Berrettini, Tommy Paul and Lorenzo Musetti along the way – before taking a set off Ruud in the trophy match.

He followed that with a run to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open, where he went down 4-6 4-6 to Alcaraz. But it’s all part of the learning curve for Draper, who is improving on clay and who has won two of his last four meetings with the Spaniard.

Another player with a handy record against Alcaraz is Holger Rune, who sensationally downed the home favourite in the final of the Barcelona Open in April.

The Dane, who was once ranked as high as four in the world, has reached the quarter-finals of the French Open twice and made the final of two ATP 1000 events on clay.

A lack of consistency continues to dog Rune, but there’s no doubt that he possesses considerable talent and upside – particularly on clay.

Notable mentions should be given to Francisco Cerundolo, the Argentine who has come into his own this clay court season.

The 26-year-old has appeared in five ATP Tour finals on the surface, while seemingly upping his game in 2025 – defeating top ten ranked players like Zverev, Ruud and Alex De Minaur.

Cerundolo took Djokovic to five sets at the 2024 French Open, before winning a set from Alcaraz at the Monte Carlo Masters in April, subsequently reaching the semi-finals of the BMW Open and the Madrid Open.

FIRST’s value pick for the men’s French Open

Scoring odds of 25/1 on the fifth seed for a tournament seems a steal; Jack Draper has the form and the game to make such a price appear outstanding value.

Also worth considering

Holger Rune has tremendous potential, particularly on clay, and while punters aren’t assured a smooth ride given his inconsistent nature, the Dane could upset the odds at Roland Garros once more.

And Francisco Cerundolo is making waves on clay, beating big names and earning a seeding of 18 for the French Open. He’s a dangerous outsider.

Picks: Holger Rune (50/1 each way, Ladbrokes), Francisco Cerundolo (40/1 each way, Mr.Play)
