PFA Player of the Year odds: Haaland leads race as Arsenal stars close in
We’re 10 games into the Premier League season and the table is starting to take shape. Current title favourites Arsenal lead the way, at 2/5 with most bookamers, with Manchester City their closest rivals, albeit with a six-point gap between the pair.
But which individual stars have really caught the eye in the opening weeks?

Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland remains the favourite for the PFA Player of the Year award having scored his 12th and 13th Premier League goals of the season in Manchester City’s recent 3-1 win over Bournemouth.
Haaland has now scored at least seven more goals than any other player in the Premier League this season as he single-handedly keeps City in the title race.
The Norwegian hitman was at 4/1 for the award last month but his exploits in front of goal has seen his price shorten to 15/8 with William Hill.
The outright leader in the Premier League golden boot market. Whether his current goal run is sustainable is another matter entirely, but as City look to close the gap on the Gunners at the top of the table; they’ll need Haaland to maintain his rich vein of form.

Gabriel Magalhaes
The PFA Player of the Year has been won by five defenders since Norman Hunter claimed the inaugural award in 1974.
A centre-back last did so in 2019, when Virgil van Dijk landed individual glory. Is that run set to end this season? Gabriel Magalhaes is proving a star performer for Arsenal and both ends of the pitch.
The Gunners have conceded fewer goals (3) than any other team in the Premier League this season, with the Brazilian being key to this record.
In addition, Gabriel has scored once and provided two assists as Arsenal look to end their lengthy wait for the Premier League title.
With set-pieces a key route to goal for Mikel Arteta’s men, the 27-year-old has since come in at 4/1 with William Hill to win the PFA Player of the Year award. For context, he was at 17/1 last month.

Bukayo Saka
Remaining with Arsenal, winger Bukayo Saka has seen his price shorten from 12/1 to 10/1 with bet365, and that’ll likely shorten further as the Gunners maintain their flying domestic form.
If Arsenal are to go the distance in both the league and cup competitions, then Saka has a huge role to play.
On corner duty from the right side, too, Saka has been influential in Arsenal’s ‘set-piece dependencia’ as the Gunners look to maintain their title push.
However, the output in the final third hasn’t quite been up to standard, and the consensus is he’ll need to add to his two league goals in the coming months to both boost Arsenal’s silverware pursuit and his own Player of the Year quest.
Declan Rice
The third Arsenal star to feature, Declan Rice is another whose set-pieces have been on point this season. Rice takes corners from the left and is on free-kick duties, too. It’s another weapon in the midfielder’s arsenal – no pun intended – that has helped establish the 26-year-old as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders.
Will it be enough for Rice to land the PFA Player of the Year award? That’s debatable.

The gong is usually reserved to players who thrive in the final third, with outstanding centre-backs so often the exception to the rule.
Even so, Rice has gone from 13/1 for the award last month to 12/1 with Betway as he looks to become the first central midfielder since N’Golo Kante in 2017 to win the PFA Player of the Year award.

Virgil van Dijk
The last centre-back to win the individual accolade, Virgil van Dijk is somewhat in the running for the award but it would take a monumental shift for the Dutchman to land the gong for the second time.
Van Dijk is at 33/1 with William Hill to pip the likes of Haaland, Gabriel, Saka and Rice to top spot next year.
Liverpool are enduring a disappointing title defence, and despite returning to winning ways at the weekend, are seven points off Arsenal at the top of the table.
A major downturn in form from both Arsenal and Manchester City would boost Van Dijk’s chances, but a repeat of 2019 seems unlikely.
