Club Brugge vs Arsenal tips and predictions: Club chase a lifeline and aim to blemish Arteta’s spotless European streak

Club Brugge state of play

Club Brugge are coming off two defeats in their last three Belgian Pro League outings, which leaves them four points adrift of Union SG at the top. It’s turning into a familiar sight for their supporters because the same side edges them in the Champions League League Phase as well, this time by a two-point gap. The best UK betting sites have them at 4/5 to push their way into the 9-24 bracket and book a place in the playoffs.

Even in Europe, Brugge’s most recent showings have not gone the way they hoped. The trip to the Portuguese capital ended in a 3-0 defeat to Sporting despite holding 55% possession. That sort of share has been par for the course this season. Club Brugge’s average comes in at 58% across all competitions.

One glaring outlier came in the Matchday 4 draw against Barcelona. They had only 24% of the ball, yet still managed to produce six shots on target and bury three goals. Twenty-one-year-old Carlos Forbs scored twice and set up the other. I expect him to be one of the main dangers against Arsenal next week. Betfred is offering 7/1 on him to score at any time.

At home, Club Brugge have a terrific record, losing only once in their last 16 and winning 12 of them. They’ve shown plenty of know-how when handling heavyweight sides.

The Belgian outfit held Barcelona to a 3-3 draw, beat Monaco 4-1, and put six past Rangers. Last season, they turned over Atalanta 2-1 and held the 36-time Serie A winners Juventus to a nil-nil. Taking a single point off Premier League leaders Arsenal would leave them in a tidy spot to push for a top-24 finish with gentler opposition in Kairat Almaty and Marseille up next.

Arsenal state of play

There is very little to question about Arsenal’s form this season. All football betting sites in the UK have Arteta’s side odds on to go the distance and lift the trophy. They are on 30 points with nine wins, three draws, and one loss, last giving anything away at Stamford Bridge against 10-man Chelsea. The Blues went down to ten men in the 38th minute when Moisés Caicedo saw a straight red for a heavy challenge on Mikel Merino.

What they have done in Europe strengthens the same claim. Arsenal came out on top in all five matchdays so far and lead the table with maximum points ahead of PSG, Bayern Munich, Inter and Real Madrid, all on 12. They go in as favourites at 7/2 with both Ladbrokes and Coral to finish the job, while QuinnBet list them 13/8 to at least reach the final.

There is still a long road ahead, but you can see why Champions League betting sites fancy their chances. The side looks rock solid at the back, facing 1.8 shots on target per match on average and keeping four clean sheets from five.

We only saw them concede once, and that came in their 4-1 win against the German champions. And the front line has matched that level. The London outfit averages eight shots on target per match and 2.8 goals scored. Saka, Gyökeres and Madueke alone produce 6.51 shots on target between them per 90.

This will be Arsenal’s first-ever clash against Club Brugge. Their last trip to Belgium came against Standard Liège in 2019 under interim boss Fredrik Ljungberg. It finished 2-2 with Bukayo Saka taking man of the match honours.

Key talking point: Will Mikel Merino continue as the number nine?

Merino showed he can deliver for Arteta. Back in February, the Spanish international came off the bench as a striker and struck twice against Leicester.

That spell led into seven straight appearances in the same role. He was still mostly used in the centre of the park later on, though there were glimpses of him leading the line, taking his return to 16 goals in 63 games.

Across the last five fixtures since the Slavia Prague result, Merino featured again as a number nine and missed only two minutes of the 90 against Tottenham.

With so many of his goals coming from headers, battles in the air will matter if he features. Interestingly, Club Brugge managed only one defender out of four winning at least half of his battles in the air against Sporting in their last Champions League match.

FIRST.com’s top tip - Club Brugge vs Arsenal

Pick: Club Brugge over 0.5 goals – 3/4 – (Coral)

Every outlet offering Club Brugge vs Arsenal betting tips has it down as an Arsenal win. For me, though, 7/20 gives you nothing close to decent value with a Belgian outfit this strong at home. There is also every chance Arteta rests one or two key players, given they only need four points from three matches to secure a Round of 16 spot.

Even with form dipping over the last few games, Club Brugge scored 2.33 goals per match in the Champions League, qualifiers included, and that climbs to 4.00 on home turf. Their league campaign has them on 1.89 per match.

Pick: Total corners over 9.5 – 11/10 – (Betway)

I like to bet on corners when a match leans towards long spells of pressure. Arsenal are not the type to hold off, and Club Brugge need points if they are to mount a push for a playoff spot.

Both sides work the flanks well and, based on this season’s stats, Brugge matches saw an average of 10.75 corners for the two teams combined while Arsenal’s came in at 8.7.

Team news

Club Brugge’s treatment table currently holds Meijer Bjorn, Sabbe Kyriani, Audoor Lynnt and Reis Ludovit. The bigger concern sits in the goalkeeping department. First-choice keeper Nordin Jackers came out of the Sporting Lisbon clash with two broken ribs and looks set for six weeks out.

Ex-Liverpool star Simon Mignolet stepped in on the night but stayed in the dressing room at half-time and made way for 22-year-old Dani van den Heuvel. We are still waiting on word from camp, and the picture should make more sense once the Leuven and St. Truiden fixtures reveal who is involved.

Mikel Arteta said in a recent press conference that William Saliba picked up a niggle in training and looks unlikely to feature against Brentford.

The Club Brugge game is still up in the air. Leandro Trossard finds himself in the same boat as he continues to shake off a calf issue from last week. Kai Havertz and Gabriel remain sidelined, and both need more time in recovery before they re-enter the frame.

Club Brugge vs Arsenal expected line-ups

Club Brugge: Mignolet; Seys, Mechele, Ordonez, Siquet; Onyedika, Vanaken, Stankovic; Diakhon, Tresoldi, Forbs (4-3-3).

Arsenal: Raya; Lewis-Skelly, Hincapie, White, Timber; Rice, Zubimendi; Madueke, Odegaard, Martinelli; Merino (4-2-3-1).
