Newcastle vs Tottenham tips and predictions: Carabao Cup holders face Frank’s revitalised Spurs
Newcastle state of play
As they attempt to become the first team to retain the trophy since Manchester City in 2019, Newcastle welcome Tottenham to St James’ Park in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Eddie Howe’s side reached this stage of the competition after seeing off League One’s Bradford City 4-1 at home. However, a sterner test against a revitalised Spurs team awaits.

The Toon Army have been fairly inconsistent this season, though a late 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday and a 3-0 triumph against Benfica in the Champions League provides some momentum heading into the clash.
There are some encouraging signs emerging, particularly when assessing new additions like Nick Woltemade. The striker is on a high after scoring four goals in six games for his new club.
Alongside the big German, Newcastle have a number of potent weapons who could hurt Spurs on Wednesday night, although it certainly won’t be easy given Tottenham’s defensive organisation.
Tottenham state of play
Tottenham’s newfound resilience and discipline has been hard to miss, with their impressive 3-0 league win at Everton on the weekend highlighting the notable improvements in that area.
Spurs haven’t conceded a goal in their last two games. They’re also unbeaten away from home across all competitions this season.
Gone are the days of overcommitting themselves and playing with fire under Ange Postecoglou.

Thomas Frank has already instilled a more pragmatic approach while also showcasing his tactical diversity.
The Europa League holders now seem primed and ready to push for another trophy under the former Brentford boss after beating Doncaster Rovers 3-0 in the third round.
However, with injuries mounting and creativity still a concern, Tottenham will need to produce something special against an opponent they’ve lost the last three meetings against.
Key talking point: Goals to flow in an exciting clash?
Even though Thomas Frank’s Tottenham are tougher to break down, history suggests we could be in for a feast of goals in the North East.
In the last 10 meetings between the two sides stretching back to 2020, there has been just one clean sheet from either team. Additionally, none of those games have featured less than two goals.
While there’s a lot at stake and both teams will be keen to get their hands on the ultimate prize at Wembley on 22 March 2026, a dull, cagey affair seems unlikely.
On home turf and with a cauldron of noise behind them, Newcastle will surely go for it from the first whistle.
Likewise, Tottenham’s new identity could see them frustrate their opponents, silence the home faithful, and mount some dangerous attacks on the break.
A clash that has all the ingredients of a classic, there could be plenty of end-to-end action in this one.
FIRST’s top tip - Newcastle vs Tottenham
Tottenham are certainly a tougher nut to crack these days, but I think the home side will end up progressing through to the next round and hand Spurs their first away defeat of the season.

Team news
Newcastle have Sandro Tonali back from illness. However, England full-backs Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall are still injured.
There is also doubt over the availability of centre-back Sven Botman after he sustained a cut to his head in the win over Fulham.
Yoane Wissa, the summer signing from Brentford, remains sidelined with a knee injury.
For Tottenham, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, and Dominic Solanke are doubts for this one.
Additionally, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Radu Dragusin, Ben Davies, and Yves Bissouma remain on the treatment table.
