Tottenham vs Copenhagen tips and predictions: Spurs eye statement win as Frank’s men chase another Champions League clean sheet at home

Tottenham Hotspur state of play

Tottenham are right in the Premier League title race, sitting third and five points off Arsenal at the top. They’re coming off a convincing 3-0 win at Everton that saw two headed goals from Micky van de Ven. Thomas Frank spoke about set pieces being a “key element,” and from the way he spoke, you can see the standards they’re setting.

Defensively, Spurs look far more switched on and aggressive than in recent years, and Frank’s already talked up van de Ven as one with a big future in the game.

Tottenham’s stats at home tell a different tale, and it’s something Copenhagen will fancy testing. They’ve got one win, one draw and two defeats, not what you’d expect from a side sitting near the top. The numbers underline it: 1.25 goals on home turf compared to 2.4 away, even with possession higher at 58% to 52%. The problem has been turning that control into goals.

Next up comes Chelsea, a tough assignment, though the Blues have their own Champions League trip to Qarabağ on their plate a few days later.

Copenhagen state of play

FC Copenhagen haven’t tasted a win since late September, and the noise around Jacob Neestrup is growing by the week. The best football betting sites have them out at 7/1 for the upset, while Coral are going 4/6 on the +1.5 handicap.

Star man Andreas Cornelius made the squad for the cup tie with Hobro, back in the fold after nine games out through injury. He was on the scoresheet in their 2-0 win over Basel during the Champions League play-off round. After that, they'll face Fredericia at home in the league before the trip to London, and you get the feeling Neestrup needs a statement performance soon.

Looking at individuals, Elyounoussi has been the main threat for Copenhagen. He’s level with Jordan Larsson as their top scorer this season on four goals. Those two are the danger men, the ones who can exploit gaps if given space when pushing forward.

The Mexican full-back Rodrigo Huescas looked brilliant down the right before being forced off after fifteen minutes in the Qarabağ clash on October 1. Reports in Denmark point to a serious knee injury that could end his season. Junnosuke Suzuki stepped in and impressed, earning a place in the 3F Superliga team of the week for Round 13. Even so, Neestrup seems keen to strengthen, with Newcastle's Emil Krafth now emerging as a January target.

Key talking point: Vicario’s form highlights how often Tottenham are relying on their goalkeeper this season

Guglielmo Vicario has been right up there among Tottenham’s best this season. The goalkeeper pulled off eight top saves in that goalless draw with Monaco and backed it up with another strong outing against Everton.

For a player some fans doubted early doors, he’s answered every question. The concern now is the volume of work. Spurs see plenty of the ball, around 54% on average, yet opponents still carve out chances that demand his brilliance far too often.

FIRST.com’s top tip - Tottenham vs Copenhagen

Pick: Copenhagen Under 0.5 Goals – 11/10 – (10bet)

Spurs look a different side at the back under Thomas Frank. He’s spoken about a “clean-sheet mentality,” calling it “a strong base to build from,” and you can see it in the numbers.

Goals conceded have dropped to roughly 0.7 a game compared with 1.7 last season, and they’ve managed two clean sheets in three Champions League outings. Vicario’s been outstanding, while Van de Ven’s brace at Everton will lift belief across the back line.

As for Copenhagen, they don’t carry much threat against the bigger sides. Even their manager admitted they’ve been playing without a proper number nine.

Pick: Tottenham to win 3-0 – 17/2 – (William Hill)

For a flutter on the braver side, I like the look of Tottenham to take it 3-0. Thomas Frank’s side haven’t quite hit their stride at home, so the Chelsea game and then this one both feel like chances to lay down a marker.

Their league average of 2.67 goals per match shows they can create, and with possession control and real pace out wide, they’ve got the tools to overwhelm opponents.

Copenhagen have already shipped eight in three Champions League outings and have long struggled to contain stronger sides.

Team news

Tottenham’s injury list has hit double figures after Archie Gray suffered a calf problem in training, ruling him out for about a month. He joins Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies, Radu Drăgușin, Kota Takai, Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, and Dominic Solanke on the sidelines.

FC Copenhagen travel to London short on defenders, with Rodrigo Huescas and Magnus Mattsson out long-term and Marcos López still sidelined. Thomas Delaney remains doubtful. Mohamed Elyounoussi returned to play the full 90 against Viborg, while Andreas Cornelius was part of the midweek cup squad and could see some minutes versus Spurs.

Tottenham vs Copenhagen expected line-ups

Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Spence; Palhinha, Bentancur, Bergvall; Kudus, Richarlison, Odobert (4-3-3).

Copenhagen: Kotarski; Suzuki, Hatzidiakos, Pereira, Meling; Elyounoussi, Lerager, Delaney, Robert; Claesson, Moukoko (4-4-2).
