Golf betting tips: McIlroy, Scheffler and Ryder Cup stars out in force at the BMW PGA and Procore Championships
- Bryan Nicholson Golf Tipster
Next stop Wentworth for a Rolex Series event at the DP World Tour's headquarters as the ‘back nine’ swing moves into the business end. Across the pond after a mini hiatus, we are back with action from the FedEx Cup Fall Series.
Anyone outside the top 50 of the standings will be looking to cement their PGA Tour status over the next eight events, starting with this week’s Procure Championship and this can be a good time of the year to both find some nice winners and mark players for the future.

BMW PGA Championship: Strong field led by Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm assembles at Wentworth
We witnessed another thrilling Irish Open where home hero Rory McIlroy, who was at odds of 7/2 with Betway once again made eagle on his 72nd hole at the K Club, this time to force a playoff. He would go on to beat Joakim Lagergren and claim his second national Irish Open title.
We now move on to Wentworth as the Ryder Cup stars look to hone their games for Bethpage Black in a couple of weeks’ time.
John Rahm (13/2 Spreadex) and McIlroy (6/1 Betway) can’t be separated at the top of the market. FedEx Cup winner Tommy Fleetwood is third in the BMW PGA Championship betting at 9/1 with Ladbrokes.
It’s a who’s who of Ryder Cup stars at the top of the BMW PGA Championship odds with Ludvig Aberg and Tyrell Hatton both 18/1 with Betfred.
Wentworth is a heathlands and woodland track playing around 7,250 yards to a par of 72. It features large, elevated greens with run offs making up and downs tough if you miss them. There’s a massive premium on strong iron play, just ask Benny An!
Here’s more: The six key strategies to nailing your golf betting picks
With that in mind, Tyrrell Hatton ranks third in approach on the DP World Tour this season while he sits second in ‘greens in regulation’.
Hatton hasn’t been in his best form of late on LIV Golf, but he loves Wentworth with a first and second place finish to his name there.
He warmed up at the Irish Open with a t42. Hatton won in Dubai early in the year and finished t4 at the US Open.
Shane Lowry is a Wentworth course specialist, owning the tee to green game and shot making ability around the greens to get the job done.
Lowry threatened to contend in the Irish Open finishing t15. He owns a spate of high finishes at the BMW PGA Championship including taking the title here a few years ago. The Irishman is fourth in ‘strokes gained approach’ on the PGA Tour this season.
Thomas Detry is being overlooked by the bookmakers this year. The Belgian grabbed his maiden win in style in Phoenix and is another player who excels with his irons.
The 32-year-old was 21st for ‘greens in regulation’ last year on the DP World Tour before he made the transition to the US. Detry warmed up nicely last week in Ireland with a t12 finish.

Procore Championship: Scheffler, Schauffele and company warm up ahead of the 45th Ryder Cup
The American Ryder Cup team dominate the betting at the Procore Championship which sees a much stronger field than usual as Keegan Bradley’s men look to fine tune their games ahead of Bethpage Black.
On offer this week is 500 FedEx Cup Fall points for the winner and the players are competing for a purse of $6m (£4.43m). Patton Kizzire took home the spoils in 2025 on a total of 20-under par.
The Silverado North course is a par 72 playing 7,138 yards, with a mixture of Bent/Poa greens. Johnny Miller who is part owner of the resort says muggy air makes for tricky distance control.
Over the years the premium on the North course has been placement off the tee and strong iron play. You need to be able to shape it both ways and fly it low and high.
Only Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau of the US Ryder Cup side won’t line out for the Procore Championship where Scottie Scheffler is a short priced 9/4 favourite with BetMGM.
Strategy talk: First round leader betting - Four key factors for first starters
Justin Thomas has a great record at Silverado with four top 10s to his name here. Buoyed by his Ryder Cup pick, Thomas could be the man to beat at the Procore Championship.
The American returned to the winner’s enclosure earlier this year at the RBC Heritage and was t7 last time out at the Tour Championship.
Thomas is a birdie machine who likes low scoring golf courses like Silverado. At East Lake he opened with a 64. He leads the tour in approaches from 50-125 yards.
Ben Griffin has only played at Silverado once which resulted in a missed cut but that was a few years ago.
I like his course fit for the track; he’s 28th in ‘strokes gained approach’, 40th in ‘greens in regulation’ and he has a hot flat stick too for a low scoring event, ranking 22nd (and rating a 10 out of 10 in my course fit model) for ‘strokes gained putting’. Griffin is also third for ‘total birdies’ in 2025.
Akshay Bhatia loves to shape the ball from the tee and approaches so he should like it at Silverado.
He owns one top 10 here in three appearances and comes to the Procore Championship with playoff form of t6-t26-t13. Bhatia is 11th in ‘strokes gained approach’ and 10th in ‘total birdies’ so you must fancy his chances this week without the Ryder Cup distraction.
FIRST’s top tips for the Procore Championship
Justin Thomas’ odds are generous given Scheffler is taking up so much of the book percentage. Back him at 16/1 (six places) each way with Betway.
