Charles Schwab Challenge: Things to consider

We are heading back to Texas and Fort Worth. Colonial Country Club to be precise and Scottie Scheffler’s presence in the field in his home Lone Star State looks ominous for the other protagonists.

The Charles Schwab Challenge field will compete for 500 FedEx Cup Points and a share of a $9.5m (£7.1m) purse as the race for Ryder Cup spots hots up. Colonial is the longest running of the PGA Tour’s host venues outside of the majors.

Last year Davis Riley (33/1 Ladbrokes) blitzed the field at a Colonial Country Club that had seen some renovations since the previous Charles Schwab Challenge renewal.

A runaway victory is not something that happens regularly on what is usually a tight leaderboard at Colonial.

The defending champ put in a great performance at last week’s PGA Championship too, pushing Scottie Scheffler, until he came unstuck at the par five seventh hole.

The action never stops and amongst the events this week are US Open qualifying at three venues including Walton Heath, and the Soudal Open takes centre stage on the DP World Tour in Belgium.

Charles Schwab Challenge: Top of the market

After Scottie Scheffler’s (9/4 BetMGM) PGA Championship win he has now won his last two events by a combined 13 strokes. Yes, ominous for the Charles Schwab Challenge field who can only hope ‘the Scheff’ is suffering from a hangover.

The only man in the field on the hallowed grounds of Colonial CC more than Jordan Spieth (22/1 Betway) is Ryan Palmer – but is Palmer too old to challenge this week? Odds of 1000 plus would suggest so. However, the first-round leader market may represent some good value than just the outright tournament winner.

Colonial CC emphasises precision over power with a thick treeline and doglegs in play.

Changes have been made to the track which include cutting back the trees for new sight lines, removing bunkers and flattening green surfaces.

Accurate players handy with the short irons and wedges who make a lot of birdies are on the shortlist for the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Daniel Berger is a former winner of the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial and over the last few weeks he keeps popping up in lots of the key metrics I have been looking at.

Berger is still on the comeback trail though after a long-term injury and 22/1 with Betway looks a fair price.

Harris English is seeing early money and that doesn’t surprise me. Colonial is the type of layout English loves, and he comes here off the back of a t2 in the PGA Championship, having closed with a 65.

English has a fifth and a second place to his name in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial. The world number 17 is showing progressive form of 66-11-t2.

Aaron Rai has some decent form at Colonial Country Club with finishes of 68-12-32 in three appearances and he is another player who did well at Quail Hollow, finishing in the top 20.

Rai picked up his maiden win at the Wyndham Championship last year – on a Sedgefield course that shares similarities with Colonial. The Englishman is showing progressive current form with figures of t38-t23-t19 leading into the event.

Most notably though, Rai leads the PGA Tour in ‘driving accuracy’, and he is sixth in ‘par four scoring’ and 16th in ‘greens in regulation’. Rai ranks 20th in approach play and 30th in ‘birdie average’.

JT Poston is another man with form at Sedgefield, having won the Wyndham Championship there without making a bogey in 72 holes.

Poston was at it again at Quail Hollow as he led the ‘bogey avoidance’ stats late into the tournament enroute to a t5 finish that followed a t11 at the RBC Heritage and a top 25 at the Truist Championship.

Poston was 12th at Colonial last season and owns another top 10 in the record books here.

FIRST’s top tip for the Charles Schwab Challenge

Harris English is a self-confessed lover of treelined courses. He has already won this year and looks to be hitting top gear.

Back English to win the tournament at 40/1 (six places) each way with BetMGM.

Pick: Harris English to win the tournament - 40/1 (six places) BetMGM

Extra tips

Aron Rai and JT Poston have both won at Sedgefield which is a similar type of course to Colonial. They are both accurate players who are good with the short stick.

Back Rai to win at 33/1 (six places) each way with Betway. Get Poston onside at 40/1 (six places) each way with BetMGM.

Charles Schwab Challenge: Value bets

Ben Griffin is a very underrated player who hasn’t yet got the recognition he deserves. His only win came a few weeks ago in the team event with Andrew Novak at the Zurich Classic.

With the money, status and exemptions that came with that win, Griffin is now freerolling and he showed that at the PGA Championship with a top 10 finish.

The stats show that Griffin is just an all round solid and consistent performer. A ranking of ninth in ‘total birdies’ catches the eye though.

I’m also drawn to Harry Hall who led here at Colonial two years ago after an opening 62 to propel him in front by three shots.

Hall held the halfway lead enroute to a third-place finish. Hall is in great form this season, finishing t18, t26, t49, t33, t20 in his previous five events to the PGA Championship.

Last week at Quail Hollow he recorded an excellent top 20. Hall leads the tour in ‘total birdies’ and ‘overall putting average’.

He likes going low, with two wins on the Korn Ferry Tour, and with his maiden PGA Tour victory coming last year at the ISCO Championship.

Ryo Hisatsune is a man finding his feet now on the PGA Tour. Bear in mind Hisatsune won the French Open at Le Golf National on the DP World Tour to show his potential on tough, tight tracks.

Hisatsune featured early on Sunday at Quail Hollow – a course that doesn’t suit – only to finish in an ambulance, hence an inflated price this week at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Prior to this the Japanese youngster recorded a top 10 in Mexico and top five finishes in the Valspar Championship and the Valero Texas Open.

An interesting stat for Hisatsune this week is a ranking of 11th in ‘sand save percentage’ as players will have a lot of bunker shots around the greens at Colonial.

FIRST’s top value tips for the Charles Schwab Challenge

Harry Hall really stands out for me this week. He has been playing great golf and has form at Colonial. Back the Englishman at 55/1 (ten places) each way with Ladbrokes.

Ben Griffin is flying now, and he can freeroll for the season. He looks a nice price to win the Charles Schwab Challenge at 50/1 (six places) each way with Betway.

Ryo Hisatsune’s price is too big because of a poor finish last week. Take advantage by backing him at 80/1 (ten places) each way with Coral or Ladbrokes.
