Next Rangers manager odds: Sean Dyche favourite to replace Russell Martin

Next Rangers manager odds: Who could replace under-fire Russell Martin?

Rangers’ dismal start to the season continued with a 1-0 defeat to Genk in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Russell Martin’s side were outplayed by the Belgian side – who sit third bottom of the Belgian Pro League – at Ibrox and surely his time is up as manager.

The Light Blues have endured their worst start to a league season since 1978, failing to win any of their opening five Premiership matches.

Furthermore, Rangers have scored just 17 goals across their opening 13 matches this season. Four of those came against lower league opposition in Alloa Athletic.

At the time of writing, Rangers are languishing way down in 11th place. It is simply not good enough and the board must make a change before things get even worse.

It is a matter of when, not if, Martin’s spell at Ibrox comes to an end. In that regard, who will be the next man to take charge of the Glasgow giants?

According to BetVictor, a former Premier League manager leads the way…

Sean Dyche – 11/4

Sean Dyche has been routinely linked with the managerial role at Rangers in recent months, even before Martin was appointed.

The Englishman has managed over 300 games in the Premier during spells with Burnley and Everton and he knows how to get a team organised and well drilled.

His style may not be aesthetically pleasing, but there is no doubt Rangers would be much more solid defensively should he arrive at the club.

Steven Gerrard – 10/3

Gerrard was the ideal choice as next manager following the end of last season, especially after his success at the club between 2018-2021.

No move materialized, but might it happen now? He is still the last man to lead the Gers to a top flight title, coming back in the 2020/21 season.

If he does make a return, his job would arguably be just as tough as it was when he walked through the Ibrox doors in 2018.

Danny Rohl – 4/1

Rohl was another manager who was linked prior to Martin’s appointment in the summer. He built his reputation as an assistant to Hansi Flick at both Bayern Munich and the German national team, winning the Champions League with the former.

His spell at Sheffield Wednesday ended in acrimonious circumstances, but is Rangers simply too big a job for the young coach?

Gary O’Neil – 9/2

Gary O’Neil is still without a job following his sacking by Wolves in December 2024. He managed to keep the Old Gold in the Premier League in both 2022/23 and 2023/24.

With 88 games managed in the English top flight, O’Neil has plenty of experience. Might he be just another Martin, however?

Nuno Espirito Santo – 8/1

Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked a few weeks ago by Nottingham Forest and he is currently one of the more attractive options out there as a potential new manager.

He took Forest from the depths of the top flight to seventh and qualification for Europe in the space of 18 months.

The former Wolves boss might not be one of the favourites, but in terms of stature, he could be the best option for Rangers.

Barry Ferguson – 8/1

Barry Ferguson is a club legend. His spell as a player saw him win 15 major trophies and lead Rangers to the UEFA Cup final in 2008.

In the dugout, however, it is a different story. As such, it was a surprise when he was announced as the interim manager in February 2025 until the end of the season.

He won just six of his 15 games, although that included an Old Firm victory and a stunning 3-1 triumph over Fenerbahce.

Regarding a full-time position? Thanks, but no thanks.

Sean Dyche (7/2)

Sean Dyche considered the favourite to succeed Russell Martin, should the Gers opt to make a change in the dugout. The former Watford and Burnley boss was most recently manager of Everton in the Premier League.

After previously keeping the Toffees in England’s top tier, Dyche was dismissed in January. However, having only previously managed ‘underdog’ teams throughout his time in management, this job would come with the most week-to-week pressure of his managerial career.

Steven Gerrard (7/2)

The former Ibrox boss previously held the post between 2018 and 2021, before departing for Aston Villa. The Liverpool legend’s last job, in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq, also came to an end in January.

While in Scotland, the now 45-year-old guided the Teddy Bears to an invincible Scottish Premiership season and interrupted Celtic’s streak of nine consecutive titles. He left ‘The Commandos’ with the club sitting in 12th place in the 18-team Saudi Pro League at the start of the year.

Danny Rohl (4/1)

Djeidi Gassama is arguably the pick of the Gers’ summer signings, but he might not be the only person to swap Hillsborough for Ibrox this year. Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl (4/1) is another unattached manager that could be tempted by the move.

The Owls gave the German his first taste of management, but the 36-year-old has a whole host of coaching experience at the likes of RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and as assistant manager of the German national team previously.

Jose Mourinho and a Rangers club legend...

Other unattached managers such as Gary O’Neil (9/2), Jose Mourinho (6/1) and Michael Carrick (8/1) come with a variety of previous jobs and experience, all at different stages of their managerial career.

Club legend Barry Ferguson (8/1) held the job on an interim basis, steadying the ship, last season. Newly appointed Brondby boss Steve Cooper is 10/1 with the man he preceded at the City Ground – Nuno Espirito Santo – 12/1 after the former Nottingham Forest manager lost his job last week.

Sean Dyche – 3/1

Sean Dyche is currently the favourite to succeed Martin according to BetVictor and he has been out of the game since being sacked by Everton at the start of the year.

Dyche achieved plenty of success with Burnley, establishing the club as Premier League regulars during his time there. Althoug, with Everton, things didn’t go quite to plan.

There is no doubt that his approach to the game would turn Rangers into a team that is defensively sound and difficult to beat, but the football wouldn’t be pretty.

Steven Gerrard – 7/2

For many of the supporters, Steven Gerrard was the manager they hoped would return ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The Englishman revitalized the Gers between 2018 and 2021, taking them from also rans to Premiership winners in just three seasons.

His departure stung, but Gerrard hasn’t enjoyed the same level of success elsewhere upon leaving Ibrox. Sacked by Aston Villa and failing in Saudi Arabia means the former Liverpool captain is a free agent.

He would be a popular choice. But they do say never go back.

Danny Rohl – 4/1

Before Rangers plumped for Martin, Danny Rohl was linked with the vacant managerial role at the club.

Rohl left Sheffield Wednesday at the end of July by mutual consent following a chaotic summer and is still without a job.

The 36-year-old spent time at Bayern Munich and the German national team as assistant manager, winning the Champions League with the former. His senior managerial career amounts to just 89 matches, however.

Gary O’Neil – 9/2

Gary O’Neil was another who was linked before Martin was appointed. He has been out of the game since his sacking by Wolves at the end of 2024.

He does have experience managing in the Premier League with Wolves and Bournemouth, but this is no sure fire way of guaranteeing success in Scotland.

Jose Mourinho – 6/1

Jose Mourinho may be the fifth favourite for the job should Martin depart Rangers, but he is arguably the most attractive option.

Yes, he may be in the twilight stages of his career, but Mourinho would be box office gold in the Scottish football cauldron, no doubt about that.

He was recently sacked by Fenerbahce for failing to reach the lucrative Champions League group stages. As such, the 62-year-old is a free agent.

Mourinho wont be short of offers, but would he take on the mammoth job of managing Rangers should it arise?

Barry Ferguson – 8/1

The former Rangers captain stepped into the breach following Phillipe Clement’s sacking in February and promptly guided Rangers to a win at Parkhead over Celtic and through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, all in the space of three days.

Despite this, the rest of his interim spell was poor. Indeed, he won just five of his 11 league games in charge, along with losing to Athletic Bilbao in the last eight of the Europa League.

The football was poor, performances – aside from those against Fenerbahce and Celtic – were even worse and he shouldn’t be in the running to replace Martin.
