IMAGO: Arsenal came second place for the third season running

So often the bridesmaid, and never the bride. As Manchester City failed in their title defence, it was Liverpool, and not Arsenal, who capitalised to secure Premier League glory. It meant that, for the third season running, the Gunners finished second. This came after another summer of investment as the north London side added Riccardo Calafiori, Mikel Merino and the permanent addition of David Raya.

Yet, as has so often been the case for Arsenal, their issues can be narrowed down to one simple reason – a lack of goalscorer. Arsenal were one of five teams that didn’t have a player reach double figures for goals scored in the Premier League last season. It was the first time since the 1927/28 campaign that the club didn’t have a player reach the milestone for goals.

While Arsenal finished the season third for goals scored (69) that was still 13 fewer than title winners Liverpool. Kai Havertz was their top scorer with nine league goals to his name, even after the German endured a spell on the sidelines in 2025. The priority this summer is to sign a new striker, and for a team that managed just 14.4 shots per game, that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Chelsea15.7
Bournemouth15.3
Arsenal14.4

In addition, Arsenal ranked poorly for key passes per game last season, which goes some way to explaining the lowly goal return and the number of shots per game they averaged in England’s top tier last term.

Passes and though balls

TeamKey passes per game
Liverpool13.4
Man City12.4

Bournemouth11.5
Arsenal11.3

While 11.3 key passes per game wasn’t exactly the lowest return in the division, you can see from the statistics for Liverpool that it was two fewer than the champions, and shows where Arsenal need to gain ground if they are close the gap on the Reds in the coming campaign. The overreliance on Bukayo Saka also needs to end, the England international finishing the season third for key passes (58) of all Arsenal players, despite starting just 20 of 38 matches.

Not only did Martin Odegaard rank top for key passes of Arsenal players in the Premier League last season, the Norwegian had the eye for a defence splitting pass. Indeed, only Bruno Fernandes (16) made more accurate through balls than the Arsenal skipper (15) in the Premier League last season, and it’s clear they need Odegaard at his creative best in order to maximise the signing of a new striker.

And not only did Arsenal look to pry apart a defence where possible, they were able to successfully build attacks from the back and retain possession. A 57.1% possession return ranked third in the Premier League this season, while a 87.1% pass success was the second best.

Ultimately key in both figures ranking highly was the performances of William Saliba at the back, the Frenchman averaging the fifth most passes per game (72.8). The pass master, as one might expect, returned the best pass success rate (94.6%) in the division as the centre-back played his part in Arsenal’s dominance. With a further year of experience under his belt, Saliba will hope to use this season’s disappointment to spur him on next season.

Goals conceded, shots conceded and xG conceded

While the old saying goes ‘the best defence is a good offence’, for Arsenal this wasn’t the case. They may not have won the Premier League title, yet the Gunners were watertight at the back with Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, prior to injury, forging without doubt the staunchest defence in the division.

Arsenal conceded at least seven fewer goals (34) than any other team in the Premier League last season as Saliba and Gabriel continued their fine partnership. It may not have been enough to secure a first Premier League title in over 20 years, but it’s a solid foundation to continue to build upon ahead of the coming campaign.

TeamxG against
Arsenal40.2
Liverpool44.18
Chelsea50.73
Man City54.07
Everton54.35

The Gunners worked hard off the ball to limit their opponents in the final third, as they conceded just 9.5 shots per game – looking at the Manchester City stats only the Cityzens shipped fewer (9.3) – and managed the lowest xG against return (40.2) in the division. This in turn helped David Raya to the Golden Glove award, an accolade he shared with Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels, as the Spaniard managed 13 clean sheets.

Crucially is that Arsenal have a platform to build upon. There defence is set for Mikel Arteta’s side, while they remain hellbent on signing Martin Zubimendi as the Gunners look to the Spaniard to strengthen in midfield. A striker, and a world class one at that, is of paramount importance this summer. Failure to bolster in the final third, and Arsenal will be facing the prospect of another trophyless season.
