Burnley betting statistics - 2024/25

While Leeds so often blitzed their opponents on their way to promotion, Burnley were the antithesis - Scott Parker relied on a watertight backline to book their Premier League spot.

That’s not to say that the Clarets didn’t frequently get among the goals. But they were one of - if not the - most resolute sides in the top four tiers of English football during the 2024/25.

Parker will be hoping for a similarly solid season as Burnley look to avoid an immediate return to the Championship. The three promoted sides conceded the most goals in the Premier League last season, and it’s clear that the Clarets head coach has his work cut out if the Lancashire side are to avoid a similar fate.

Goals conceded, shots conceded and xG against

While we nominally focus on the attacking side to a team’s game, it’s Burnley’s defensive work that warrants the most praise here. Parker implemented a regimented approach at the back, and it saw the Clarets concede just 16 league goals on their way to promotion.

This absolutely incredible achievement came despite the fact that Burnley still conceded 9.4 shots per game, admittedly a low haul. But still the second fewest in the Championship last season, with Leeds (6.7) pipping them to top spot for this metric. The Clarets weren’t exactly the hardest team to create chances against, yet teams ultimately failed to get the better of James Trafford between the Burnley sticks.

This did, however, mean that Burnley put up a return of 43.52 xG against in the Championship last season, a return only Leeds (34) could better. However, while they did have a relatively high xG compared to the number of goals they conceded, the exploits of Trafford in goal ensured that Burnley conceded far fewer goals than they should have.

Burnley’s xG against overperformance of 27.52 was far and away the highest in England’s second tier last term, as they relied on the heroics of the now-Manchester City shotstopper to maintain their defensive resolve. Their solidity at the back was a key reason behind their Premier League return, and would have seen the Clarets promoted as champions had it not been for Manor Solomon’s late goal in Leeds’ final-day win at Plymouth.

Saves, save success rate and clean sheets

With the low number of goals conceded and shots faced, it’s not a surprise that Trafford was routinely forced into action. As such, only Leeds (73) made fewer saves than Burnley (91) in the Championship last season at a rate of just two per game as sides struggled to forge chances.

With his expert shot-stopping ability, Trafford unsurprisingly ended the Championship season with a better save success rate (84.5%) than any other goalkeeper in the division. His move to Manchester City is a blow for the club, with Martin Dubravka arriving as the youngster’s replacement at Turf Moor.

As you might expect, Burnley ranked top for clean sheets (30) in the 2024/25 Championship campaign, and kept a whopping 12 successive clean sheets over the festive period. One critique, though, was the number of set-piece goals conceded. While they shipped the fewest in the division (6), relative to the number of goals they conceded, 37.5% of the goals they did let in were from set pieces.

Goals, shots, conversion rate and xG

While Burnley were widely praised for their watertight backline, they were still able to put teams to the sword - scoring 69 league goals last season, the fourth most in the division. Sheffield United were one of those to net more than the Clarets, though it’s worth noting that seven of their 70 goals came in the three playoff games.

The lower number of shots combined with Burnley’s solid goal haul ensured that the Clarets managed a solid 11.7% conversion rate; only Norwich (12.5%) and Leeds (12%) managed better in England’s second tier last term, with the new departed Josh Brownhill and Zian Flemming both Burnley’s leading lights in front of goal, striking 18 and 12 times, respectively.

And while Burnley’s xG haul of 63.86 was the eighth highest in the Championship last season, they managed to overperform their xG by 2.14, the biggest overperformance in the division. They’ll hope for those moments of magic in the Premier League this season in order to retain their top-flight status.

Parker’s side have made a lukewarm start upon their return to England’s top tier, with their sole win coming against fellow promoted side Sunderland. They have been dealt a tough hand to kick off the campaign, having already faced Tottenham and Manchester United away from home, falling to a late defeat to the latter.

They need to rediscover the defensive resolve that saw them book their Premier League spot in the first place, and do so quickly or risk a long season that’ll culminate in relegation.
